hi all....every year about this time, i remove the covers and check tappet clearances (.4mm cold n dont get colder than at the mo). have had the boat since new in 2001, the engine is all original, (except for the usual service items) it has 790hrs on the clock all done by yours truly, BUTTTTTT !..........for the 1st time ever, i had to adjust 2 of the 8, by just a smidge, the others were still spot on!!.....QUESTION .....is this good, bad, worrying, forget it, think yourself lucky, damage pending etc etc ......thoughts, comments or abuse would be of interest.......THANKS IN ADVANCE................regards steve

I think that one thousandth of an inch is pretty close to your margin of error for such measurements and is probably not worth worrying about.

I assume that you can only measure to 0.001" with your feeler gauges so it might just be that the difference in temperature from your previous checks has tipped your measurement over to the next thousandth. Although if it is colder this time you might expect contraction to make the measurement smaller, it could increase due to dissimilar metals being used in the engine or even the feeler gauges.

I suppose if there is a real increase in clearance then it could be due to wear of the various components. Alternatively, it could just be a bit of carbon on the valve seat so that it is not closed as tightly as last time.

the 2 concerned were loose by just .001" (in old money) !!!

Steve,

I would have been tempted to leave them alone, given the tiny error. In time, it would be normal for the gap to open, but for me 790 hours equates to about 24,000 miles on a vehicle at average 30 mph. I would not expect to adjust tappets until at least 100,000 miles on a vehicle.
