I have a KAD 300 that seems to produce copius smoke at low revs Ie in 4-5 knot limits, once its up and reving theres no problem, is this normal? I used to have other KAD engines that didnt do this after warm up.
well it is a Volvo, Volvos are renoud for smoking it may be worth checking your injectors. What is the age of the engine? also where do you get your diesel from? its also worth getting some Soltron this stuff is the best aditive for diesel iv ever seen and used. Just add some when you fill up and it stops smoking but about 80-90% better.
P.s please excuse my spelling! lol
sounds like oil could be weeping into exhaust manifold or turbo charger exhaust side. Used to have fords and they did this if left for a few weeks. oil would weep past the exhaust valve guides into manifold or weep out the turbo charger bearing. My cheapo solution - get the turbo spinning and it would burn out the oil and the blue smoke would clear quickly.
If the blue smoke persists then oil is getting into combustion chamber via valves/ head or pistons - v unlikely on such a new engine though.
At tick over and low engine revs, the induction manifold is under vacuum and can pull a mist of oil from the turbo bearing through the turbo's piston ring type seals (which are not perfect seals), this oil is then drawn into the engine and burnt. This is perfectly normal. Having said that, on a new Kad300 I'd have thought this should be barely noticable. You can tell if this is happening as oil will collect in the aftercooler.
