Just changed my old Hurth HBW100 for ZF 10M 2R. The new box is quite a bit noisier and makes a loud CLACK when selecting both forward and reverse gears. The old Hurth made a soft KLUNK. Anyone else noticed this noise when changing gear on the ZF or do I have a faulty box.

Hi
I have had both the HBW100R2 gearbox and changed it for the ZF10M2R box, if you do not hear the clunk then probably it is on its way out!!

All the Hurth and ZR boxes are mechanical and thats why you get the clunk 'which is normal' when both selecting forward/reverse gears.

After talking for some time with ZF gears to prolong the life of you new gearbox change the oil every 100 hrs and make sure you use the right oil and 'do not' overfill the gearbox.

I only fitted this box today so it should not be on it's way out. Was really surprised at the noise it made as have had Hurth many years and always the klunk.Think it must definately be faulty. Left a message with Midland Chandlery who are selling these boxes on ebay at mid-day. Waiting for someone to get back to me.

I said if you do NOT hear a clunk the box is probably on it's way out, you say it makes a loud clunk so to me it should be ok.
However I assume the gearbox works ok when going into and out of gear.

I also assume you know there is a very slight gearbox ratio differance between the Hurth and ZF box, changed mine last year (and the thrust plate) and no problems.

Thanks everyone for your help. I am new to posting here and inadvertantly posted twice. Reply from cmedsailor on my other post states that the loud clack is normal on the ZF so feel much better about the box now.
