Just been given this windlass.... ?

While working knackered chaps bout he has removed this windlass and gave it me.
It seems to work OK. Be good to know what nake it is. No markings on it to help ID it.

Can anybody put info for it. Chris size aswell so I can get some. He has a load there but seemed small for it.

Just the job for a vintage boat - all that bronze!

Chances are the gypsy is for an imperial size of chain, but no idea what size. I'd take it with you next time you go to a chandlers and try a few for size.

If it is Lofrans, you should be able to get a gypsy (Why's it called that?) for the chain you want to use, but you'll want to be sitting down when they tell you the price!

my boat is a 25 footer and 2.6 ton cruiser. thinking tis will do the job. saves on buying a new electric one.

I have one but I had to pay £20 for it. 😞

Its previous owner had mistakenly assumed the hex head on top was an oil filling hole. It isn't. It's a stub axle for a bevel gear. And it doesn't have oil in it anyway.

I overhauled it and then it was fine. Powerful but slow.

There's a fair bit of information available on line, which I have copies of if you want it.

Damn is that all. I've just removed mine, I was hoping to sell it!
The man I bought it from had been a Royal Marine major (colonel?) who had served with great distinction in WWII.
He originally wanted £30 but when I went to collect it he changed his mind and said he couldn't take that because it wasn't working, so £20 would do.

A fine gentleman. As is anyone who gives me a discount. 😉

Our old boat had a lever winch but it was faster by hand for me. However wife/navigator needed it to raise anchor when I anchored off Lynmouth and rowed ashore alone on dinghy that part deflated and i could not push it against the bristol channel tide enough to get back to craft

They're not all made equal.
My previous boat had an older windlass with a great long bar at the handle. It would effortlessly pull in about a metre of chain with each stroke.
The Royale which I just took off is nowhere near as good. Handle is less than half the length and it takes a fair bit of effort to move. You get about a foot with each stroke. So in shallow water I just lift by hand, for speed.

Glacial is the term I would use; I did a few dozen cycles to show willing then gave up and pulled up the chain manually. Maybe of use if the hook has snared a transatlantic cable or the Queen Mary's lost anchor chain.
Usually I sit on the forehatch and haul in the chain hand over hand. Then use the windlass to break out the anchor if necessary.

It's handy for letting the chain run out under control.

I recently had to anchor in 22-23m. I had nearly 80mof chain out. 10mm with a 25kg anchor, took an hour to get it back up using the windlass for almost the whole lot.

Easy to extend the handle by fitting a tube over the top of the existing handle

I extended the handle of my Mk V bilge pump with a sutable size tube
