Just been \'dismissed\'.......time to go?

Dear all, we have found the boat (STC) and were planning to get ready for next year...............then out of the blue I find myself 'not required' at work any more. I have been offered the choice to work freelance for the same company but this is probably a bit 'thin' in reality.

I know that I can not expect/ask you to make my decision for me.............but a little help or words of advice/encouragement/whatever would be much appreciated.

We (me and my wife) were intending to set sail June 2005...........................

Do we go NOW ?

We are really keen and chomping at the bit (life is too short and all that..) or should we maintain a more 'sensible' stance and wait.

What would you do?

Many thanks, all comments welcome.

Go now .
He who hesitates etc.....
The people who go are usually the ones who decide about a month before, those
who spend years planning their trips rarely go...

Go now - in 10 years time it will be the things you didn't do that you will regret not the things you did, and I speak from experience. Life is too short.

I agree with Chris - there are those who "talk about it" and those who "do".

Re: Just been \'dismissed\'.......time to go?

We were fortunate to go very early (VR) so managed to set off a few years before our earliest planned date. Everything happened in a rush, but miraculously fell effortlessly into place. As a consequence we've just enjoyed two fabulous years which have been a real bonus. Maybe we were just lucky.
The bottom line, however, is the financial one - can you sustain the type of lifestyle you want? If the answer is yes, why hang around waiting for the 'thin' work to arrive?
If you want any details drop me a p.m.

Re: Just been \'dismissed\'.......time to go?

If you can sustain it financially - then go!! And if you can't, still go

(We've got too involved in land stuff and will be here a while yet - so avoid that one!)

I personally would see your 'dismissal' as the perfect excuse and good omen.. Get away and best of luck!

Clearly the "gods" are trying to tell you something. So go NOW!!

Re: Just been \'dismissed\'.......time to go?

Depends where you are going and how ready you are. It took me a year in similar ciircumstances to organise everything and make the prparations! The most difficult part is making the decision and then the commitment to go at all, once that is decided it should all fall into place.

Re: Just been \'dismissed\'.......time to go?

Take the plunge we have just. Having been talking about it for the past four years and not really planning to go ahead until 2006 I started looking at boats in May and jumped in at the deep end. Had buyers withdrawl symptons for about a week having spent too much money but now looking very forward to partial life afloat at least. What tipped me/us over the edge was losing a good friend to an accident, you only get one chance in this life this is no trial run. Good luck

Go go go

It is hard to give up a regular salary and all sorts of things but you'll never regret it, honestly.

Re: Just been \'dismissed\'.......time to go?

just go..........you will be suprised at how little you can live on, personally i set a date, and when the boat wasn't ready threw the rest inside and went, because, once you find an excuse not to go, you will never leave, i fitted all that i needed to fit on the way, after all, you now have the time to do it, the first step is the biggest after you have taken it you wonder why it took you so long.............keith

Re: Just been \'dismissed\'.......time to go?

Ah, then you have yourlife badly organised ,I have been working again for the last 4 months but my boat is only 10 minutes away and permanently fully equiped. live in a flat so we can just lock the door we are both self employed so ..no problem. to leave at 30 minutes notice for up to two years, just have to pop in supermarket on way to boat.

Re: Just been \'dismissed\'.......time to go?

GO....we did an ultra fast departure as we had to be back....got money..2 weeks later bought boat...out of water for 10 days (a few jobs) then left a week later for spain....11 months and 10,000 miles later we were back....ran out of money....three weeks later sold boat for more than we'd paid for her and we're very happy....but ready for the next time, maybe differnt boat different route...

GO GO GO - just think how hard it wiould be to quit a well paying job. Go now before you find another job and get stuck in the dreary meaningless 9-5...

Re: Just been \'dismissed\'.......time to go?

Just to throw a wobbler in, many years ago I was laid off as "not required" by a company who, bless them, offered me freelance work for them, Best thing ever happened - worked for them 2~3 days per week and earned 3+ times what I would have normally earned for 5 days.

Could be your lay off would be a boon by allowing you to stash away a little more cash (always needed for something) and also allow you time to complete your preparations
