I was on the non-tidal Thames today, pottering about and I thought it was breathtakingly beautiful. It was also friendly (for anywhere, never mind London). I was a bit surprised about the quantity of raw sewage in foot square clumps floating around, though. Having grown up by the sea a long time ago, (Pompey), I still assume I should keep my teeth together as I swim, but it was more than I expected on the Thames for some reason. Still, I was in a boat, so...

I keep toying with the idea of moving the boat up that end of the river, you're right it is beautiful. The convenience of being minutes away keep me down here, although we have our gems down this way too.

It's a type of algae that appears in the spring. Something to do with water temperature, sunlight etc. You'll also notice that the the water turns a mucky green for about two weeks in late May.

I'd go with the algae explanation personally.

If anyone is discharging raw sewage from a boat then it is likely to have gone through some sort of pump which will break it up at least a bit and if someone just emptied the bucket over the side then there is more than likely to be bog roll about.

I know some people don't put bog roll in the same place as crap.

Having said all that where is the nearest elsan? Goring - not quite sure. days maybe can't remember.

So it could be a fair old trek from Wallingford.

I still think it's algae..

Nearest Elsan is Days, nearest Pump out is Benson or Mapledurham, but none of them move all winter so it has to be going somewhere :(

I shall be passing through there sometime in May so will report back on the Algae situation, if its still there.

yes was down the boat last weekend and thought it was sh1t floating past! the water was cristal clear so dont think it was!!
