I am looking to buy a 5 ltr can of Jotun Sea Queen. Normally I have enough out of a 2.5ltr can of antifouling for two coats on my Sadler25, so I am hoping this 5 ltr can will do two applications with the second being put on maybe two years hence.

Has anyone else done this and is the paint still usable/effective after two years in the garage?

Thanks

Greg

I only antifoul every 2 years, and usually have some left over. It's always fine to use in 2 years' time, although it obviously needs a good stir.

i have nxt years seaqueen in stock already

I was advised to store open tins with the lid facing down to stop air getting in.

Maybe put the left over paint in a smaller container so less air is inside.

AFAIK antifouling only dries by solvent evaporation so can always be thinned again with the appropriate thinner.

It a good tip for storing other paint and varnish though

That's all very reassuring, thank you. The shelf life of the blue was cited to me by the supplier yesterday as 6 months. I think the red is the same and the black is 12 months (but I could have got those the wrong way around).

I've used seaqueen and it lasts for four years while cruising, not being lifted out at all. Great stuff nothing sticks, just a bit of slime.
By the time you remember about it, you'll have forgotten where you put the left overs!

Hi ukmctc - How many coats of the Seaqueen did you put on? We've been recommended 2 coats plus 3rd round waterline so interested to hear what works in practice.
Thanks, Nichola

Used Seaqueen a few times now and it always works very well. If you go for two coats and 3rd on the WL that should see you good for two seasons at least IMO.
