We are staying in over winter so when I af'd in Feb I was tempted by the above product which promised to be good for 2 years. We went on the scrubbing post today for the first time and ....... clean as a whistle! Very thin film of muddy slime, but that's all. Fwiw - the prop (which I had left bare) was hardly recognisable as a prop. Totally barnacled. We'd suspected this - hence scrub. V pleased with the jotun.

Doubly pleased as I watched this tale unfold from club house and am v fluey, hacking cough and no voice. Slaves performed well.

Jotun

What a spooky coincidence, I posted earlier on Antifouling, and one on the respondants mentioned Jotun, I had just looked up the tech details and I think this is the one I am going to use, I was going to ask if anyone else uses it.

Pretty impressive you posted the answer before I asked the question.

No it's just like that 2 - 4 years, and just slime.

Shepherds buy direct from ICI Flixborough who make it by the tanker load - for tankers.

I also have used Jotun Sea Guardian for the last few years - as you say excellent but I only put one one coat each year. As you say, just a thin layer of slime but the prop a little barnacled up - even though I put on Anhydrous Lanolin each year. Also available from Flinco in Leiston, a commercial paint supplier, although this year I did get it from Shepherds as they didn't have any stock. Used by most of the commercial fishermen.
And from memory is cheaper than top end International antifouling.
You can only get it in 5 litre tins though.

They're 10 minutes away from me :o . Used Sea Guardian from Shepherds for last 2 years - going to use the cheaper Seaforce which has an anti-slime component this coming season & see how it compares.

I thought Sea Guardian was an excellent product at a fair price.

Jotun

Would agree with all of the above, two coats good for two years, just slime on mine also.
Better than most cruising antifouls i've tried, and as good if not better than the more expensive brands.
Half the price as well if bought from Shepards.
Good stuff....

I have used Jotun for several years on my fishing vessel and my yacht. Just ensure you buy the correct Sea Guardian, if comes in various grades. Some is designed to last 48 months which meant it lasted 2 years. Jotun is also made all around the world and it may vary a bit from different places. Mine is made in Sydney.

Jotun Sea Guardian

Yet another satisfied user of Jotun Sea Guardian. I've been using it for upwards of 12 years, but for one year that I use XM (no problem with that either). The good thing is that it can be applied at any time before launch.

On haul out this year after 7 months in, just slime and as another (above) the prop was well lagged with barnacle and weed.

I first came across it when seeing the bottom of the containership I served on being sprayed with it in drydock - after three or four years between DD. There was very little pressure washing to clean the hull beforehand.

I have posted this before in another antifouling thread, but when collecting some Sea Guardian from Shepherds last month, I was told that they had limited stock left as the Sea Guardian (high copper content) is being phased out by Jotun in favour of Sea Queen, which has additional biocides, but less copper and is more expensive than Sea Guardian. The cheaper Sea Force will remain in production.

That's interesting !

Read here a week or two ago that ship's antifouling was a completely different animal.

Probably weaker in both copper and biocides due to spending so much time on the move.

For this reason, I was under the impression that antifoul had to be a different
mix for yotties and power boat men.

Another happy punter - 2 years in on my 10Knot semi displacement boat. Put 2 good coats on 2 yrs ago and again the only thing you see is a bit of slime. I think a lot of these commercial a/f are designed to be used on boats that move every day. I certainly see that most of the slime has gone after a good bash up the Solent

I have had the following back from Shepherds:
Thanks for your enquiry.

Seaguardian has been discontinued – all we have left is 2 x 2.5L black & 1 x 2.5L blue.

We are now offering SeaQueen which is better than Seaguardian, offering up to 5 years protection on the bottom and 3 years on the sides.

Here are links to these items on our website:

Morning,
I used Jotun SeaForce 30 3 years ago and like everyone else just had slime on lift out. Cracking stuff, would have used it again but not available in Mallorca :-(
Bought mine from www.paint2go.com and they were spot on.
regards
Roy

Used Non-stop years ago with excellent results. One of the Westerlys at my club used Guardian and was easily the cleanest boat out this winter, and that with no mid season scrub. I have bought some Sea Queen to use next season. Can one add extra copper ? In what form would it be added?

Does anyone know if Sea Queen is made especailly for Shepherd Marine? It does not appear in the Jotun website.

I believe last year Shepherd had 1000 litres of Seaguardian made for them to a special order.

Seaguardian was always very good and it is interesting there are some good reports about Seaforce 30.

Eroding?

What is the paint build-up like with the Jotun? I note they say it is 'self polishing' rather than eroding.

I bought the Seaforce once and I thought it wasn't anyway as good as Sea Guardian - and it was a PIG to put on - far too 'sticky'. Went back to Sea Guardian. Might have been old stock though so may be better than my experience.
