I have just applied some Jotun products to my fiberglass hull above the waterline. The primer, Penguard HB rolled on very nicely with a high density foam roller, but eventually lost its shape due to the solvent, the solvent resistant rollers were rubbish. I then flatted down the 2 coats of primer using the wet sanding method with 320 grit silicone carbide, nice and smooth. The preperation was good so I continued to apply Hardtop XP with the high density roller, and tip off using the highly recommended x9 synthetic paint brush. I applied the correct amount by roller, then very gently tipped off, but wasn't impressed with the paints flow. I have now left it to dry, and had a look at the finish today, I'm not all that chuffed to say the least. The brush marks are very pronounced, and I now think I've got a horrendous job of wet sanding all of the paint flat, nighmare.
Does anyone have any experience with this paint, and how do I get a decent finish with it.

Cheers Stevie.

I had much the same experience as you with Hardtop. After an exhaustive period of preparation, the finish on drying was vertical brush strokes stem to stern. Guidelines were followed precisely.
I am not looking forward to rubbing down.
On making enquiries of Shepherds, I was told that perhaps the thinners had flashed off too quickly preventing the paint from flowing.

Thanks for the reply afterpegassus. Though it was my ability to simply brush out the roller mottle. I spoke to Malcolm at SML, they supplied the paint, he was very helpfull, or should I say, salesman like. I ended up buying more paint from him, and looking forward to the delivery of Hardtop AS, thinners, and flow coat.
When I applied the paint, it seemed quite thick, but went on well but didn't flow out, apparently, I should have purchased some kind of flowing agent as well!! Anyway, I've already stripped off the disasterous brush job ( kinda embarrassed incase anyone seen it) just after 2 full days of curing. I used a random orbit sander with 240 grit abranet disks, only problem was the frequent renewal of the disks due to the paint still being a bit soft, but its now gone after 4hrs sanding, just another couple of hours to wet sand with 320 grit, feels like ground hog day. Best of luck with yours.
