Mmmmm it's changed alot over the last few years. not really a yachty friendly pub now. more of your high street yates affair. those were the day when you could come back from a sail on a sunday on a wet afternoon in the winter and turn up in your wet weather gear, but not now.
best bet is to put your boat on either a deacons or elephant boat yard mooring.
I agree - the food was over priced rubbish when my wife and I last went. Add to that the fact that the outside tables were disgusting and unhygienic. We too have stopped going
Its pier is/was tender (or small mobo) friendly rather than geared for yachts.
I know it closed about 3 years back for a makeover and it was rumoured to be destined to become a gastro-pub. Haven't been back since, so no idea about current incarnation.
The pub review websites seem to give it a mixed reception.
Not sure who runs it now, I used to go there a lot when it was a pub, after the refit when they did away with the front bar it was ruined as a pub, great shame.
My advice for the hamble river, esp if you want food, moor on the visitors piles near Hamble Village, use the pink water taxi or tender to get ashore and the town quay and walk up the hill to the White Hart, book a table though.
Also Oyster Quay at Mercury is OK if you want a filling meal, rather than fine dining. Too antiseptic to use just as a boozer, though. Good drinking to be had at Warsash.
Finding a nice meal around the river Hamble seems to be getting much more difficult IMHO. I'm there frequently so have tried most places more than once. The Jolly has gone steadily downhill over the last 18 month, the place at Mercury is appalling and that nice place in Hamble village (name escapes me but just down from the King and Queen) has now changed hands and gone south too. Only placed I've recently found to be v.good was the Bugle. Also the bar at Hamble point does OK food.
Begging to differ slightly. Mercury offers nosh and plenty of it (and, pretty much, chips with everything), but it's not a place you'd take a lady to impress her with your good taste in restaurant-picking. As a pit stop and a place to glug a bit, it's fine, but leave your good food guide on the boat. It's usually quite busy, so it must be doing something right.
Just opposite the Jolly Sailor is the eatery (can't remember the name) at Swanwick Marina, I have it on good authority that fish is fresh and excellent.
I protest! When I bought Merit in December she was at Deacons BY and we kept her there until March. We were down most weekends and looked in at the Jolly Sailor at least half of those. My recent experience is entirely contrary to the above.
Sadly, the place is far too busy and whilst one might often get a table, you very often wont. The service was probably better than any other busy large pub I have been in for a very long time. Very friendly, very helpful and very honest about waiting times (which is unusual these days). On the odd occasions we ate, it was above average, although expensive. The decor is good and the fires are real, which was a blessing after a February afternoon motoring on the river.
I don't think there will be enough water for Rhino to wait there for any length of time. Sadly it is probably a case of going to Mercury and pumping up the dingy, unless the Elephant or Deacons have a visitors berth.
The Jolly Sailor is near my workplace. We've been there for lunch and dinner a few times, but no longer - the plastic pot pieces in the mash potato was the last straw. Generic overpriced food served with a side of attitude.
The Lone Barn (bit of a walk) is popular, there is also a pub up the hill from Swanwick Marina which people rate.
Cafe Lulworth at Universal is worth a visit. Bit quirky but friendly and open all the time. I've been ashore there during the winter and used it for quick lunches and we've had dinner a couple of times. Always been good
