Having logged on to the forum for the passed few years I never felt qualified to contribute much as I was still working and sailing locally.
I am constantly amazed when reading the posts how much I need to know that I didnt know I needed to know and the vast knowledge base of you liveaboard community.
However job situation and life has transpired that I am now able to set sail south this summer.
I propose to meander down the French coast during August ,crossing from La Rochelle to Santander ending up at Gijon from where I hope to fly home for a short time before moving to La Coruna and south to Gib by Christmas.
Does anyone know of a resonable place to leave the boat in Gijon for a week or two.

There's a good modern marina right in the middle of Gijon where a yacht can be safely left. Friendly and rudimentary English spoken. Easy to spot at the south end of the harbour after entry. Puerto Deportivo de Gijón, Claudio Alvargonzalez 32, 33201 Gijón, Asturias. Tel: +34 985 354945.

Just above the Customs Office is a bar called La Ballena.Good food, family run, very friendly and very Spanish.

Hi Paul
Try to avoid spetember (around the equinox) in Biscay - especially if going around the french coast.
Also, consider La Rochelle to La Coruna, its a great place and a great place to leave the boat.. the staff are extremely attentive.

We're off too in RedBoat in August with a similar plan to potter down part of the French coast, across to the north of Spain then round the corner and spend some time exploring the rias. No fixed schedule, but we will find somewhere to overwinter, and head towards the Azores in May for a couple of months, before slowly working our way north again.

Hi Redboat, sorry to repeat it again, but please be careful of the inner Biscay coast around the equinox (22nd Sept this year) for a week or two before and after.. I know you both say August, fine, but plans have a habit of falling behind.

Biscay is OK.. but NOT at the autumnal Equinox.. avoid it like the plague - especially the internal route..

If you plan to be on the Spanish north coast by the end of august, early Sept, then fine.. Once you leave Rochelle, there ain't a lot of places to go in poor conditions..

Have fun, that's the main thing.. and sorry to reiterate the above.

Hi Redboat.
It would be good to meet up and cruise along the route for a stretch. You dont give much away on your profile.
Hey Viv. looking forward to searching for that wave as the sun sets as we did back in the 70s.
Thanks for the advice on the Equinox. I hope to be settled in La Coruna by then. Whats the access like to airports to the Northwest UK

Hi Captainslarty

Thanks for the warning. We've been down to Spain before but returned across Biscay mid August. (That was a trip hopefully not to be repeated, it was when Boscastle got washed out and we made la Coruna to Camaret in 48 hours flat, three reefs and no headsail in constant thunderstorms.)
