I seems to thinking about anchoring particularly tonight.

If one were to join a scope of existing chain to some new chain, would one shackle the old chain to the anchor and have the newer inboard, or vice versa? Or doesn't it matter?

BTW I'm a bit sceptical about the use of "joining shackles" which never inspire me. I think the lugs are weak. Is there a better way?

Welding a link is IMHO the only way to go. As for which end down, I would put the old chain nearest to the anchor and keep the new chain onboard.

I've not used one in this senario but I have to agree they don't look as if they are strong enough to risk your ship with. Still I suppose they do the job.

A C link with CROSBY on it is the easiest by far.

A C Link without Crosby - just don't go there. Actually there is one or 2 other good ones but the Crosby's should be the easest to find.

Old chain at the anchor end.
