Joining anchor chain

I have 30m of 5/16 calibrated chain on my boat, plus 30m of warp and want to add another length of chain. I have been told that connecting links shaped like 2 C's which you rivet together are strong enough, and I wonder whether anyone has experience of these. Is there an alternative that will go down the hawse pipe?
Thanks.

I have used one of the chain joining links and once together they seem impossible to undo except by the most unusual manipulation of the chain. Seems a bit alian to just slot them together and trust your boat to it but it seems to work. If they weren't galvanised I'd be tempted to weld them. Try contacting Jimmy Greens chandlery who seem to know about these things.

I wonder if you have a winch, I suspect you do as you are using calibrated chain as you may not be able to haul it up otherwise. I am surprised that 30 m of chain and 30 m warp is not enough. Are you dragging the anchor or do you have to anchor in very deep water. I think I would rather use the 30 m of chain as spare and buy some new chain rather than join it. You sound as though like me you would not trust the join anyway.

deja vu

there was a thread on this subject a few weeks ago either here or on scuttlebut, try a search. i suggested the joining link (which incidentally is held together with rivets) and was told that the test strength of such a link is around 20% of the rest of the chain. if you want it to go over a windlass and be secure enough to let you sleep, perhaps it would be better to go for a single length.

where are you planning to go? iv'e just done an atlantic circuit with 22m of chain and 50m of warp and never got the last 25m out of the locker.

I'm still convinced that "C" links usually have a much lower mechanical resistance than the chain they connect.. for example, if you look at the "PLASTIMO" catalogue you can see the (huge) difference..
I will NEVER trust them for my own boat.

Also, I believe than 30 meters of chain is far enough... plus 50/60 meters of NYLON rope spliced directly onto the chain..
