/forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif I've just been having a lie down!

The other day I noticed the cover clip on my outboard was missing so I went to the local dealer for a new one.

It turns out I need four bits - clip, lever, lever bracket and screw picture here with coin for size scale

£3.50 FOR EACH BIT

"Sorry but we don't set the prices of spares"

I feel another lie down coming on...........

They're lying.

Ask another dealer, by part number....£3.50 for a screw is just not right, and I don't believe it.

The guy who owns the place was away at SIBS. The person who served me looked up the part numbers and they were in a packets with the price labels on so it wasn't just me that paid a special price. There's nobody else round here so you get sucked in - but I shall enquire elsewhere before buying there again. As you say - £3.50 for a screw can't be right.

I needed a new throttle cable for my 4,5 ..... 80 quid !!

I had local guy make one using old ends .... AND he repaired the water pump leak ... 20 quid.

I would not have thought that £3.50 for a small part was that much, just a pity you needed several of them at once. It's a bit much for a screw though.

Other folk have found Wills Marine are good for mail order spares but I cannot say what their prices are like. Same as else where probably. Then no doubt P&P so still not attractive for small orders. They are in Kingsbridge, S. Devon.

Sounds like a minimum pricing system ...

3.50 for the whole lot maybe would be ok ...

I found a dealer in the US via Google when I needed new ign coils for my Johnson3. Only $10 postage. Paid him via paypal. Great savings to be made, especially when the exchange rate is over $2/£. I am sure I have his email address around somewhere, so PM me if you want it

It's ripoff Britain 'innit? I have just been researching prices for a new outboard. Yamaha F20 boatshow price GBP2800 inc. VAT. US RRP is USD3400 and best price 2900 = practically half the price at the current exchange rate. Buying lightweight parts from the US looks worthwhile to me, even if you have to pay VAT on arrival.

Generally imported items sent by courier do not seem to attract the VAT/customs people. Maybe it is deducted at source.
Posted items (Royal Mail) valued less than than I think £20 generally get through without charge.
It does seem a bit of a lottery, though
