Johnson outboard - how much water bleed should there be?

Having just replaced the impeller and generally cleaned-up our 6HP 4-stroke, I am a bit concerned by the only small jet of water coming from the water inspection tube. Although this is a regular flow it is not a strong jet as I expected and more like the flow from a needle sized hole, say 1mm. Is this correct for this type of engine or should there be more bypass water flowing than that?

The water is flowing from the rubber water inspection tube. There is also a 45deg hole in the bottom of the casing but that only seems to exude a small amount of hot air, no water. Maybe this is correct I don't know how the water system works on this engine. Also is there any way to tell if the thermostat is operating correctly?

I also have a Yamaha 2.5 on which I recently changed the impeller and that squirts way more water than the Johnson, on that the water does come from the hole in the bottom of the casing. It flows like say a 3mm hole.

Thanks,
Nick

In absence of too many replies - I have a Johnson 2.5 4-stroke. It hardly produces any water from the twin water pump indicator holes, more of a very moist warm blast - if you hold your hand over it the hand will get wet and drip water. This engine has always done this from new.

Last year I was negligent and didn't flush it at all after use, so this season I noticed there was almost no water coming out of the holes - just air. So, I have just had it fully professionally serviced, where they cleaned all the pipes and checked the water pump, amongst other things.

It's now back to producing it's very moist warm blast again.

You are referring to water being blown out of the exhaust relief ports along with some exhaust gas ... not air! I guess your 2.5 may not have a telltale which would discharge a continuous stream of water.

The OP's engine has a telltale.

My 6hp 2 stroke Evinrude has a pressurised cooling sytem and sends a strong jet of water fron a a 2mm diameter outlet on the telltale.

I am afraid I likewise know nothing about the 4 stroke's cooling system but I think the water inspection tube, as they call the telltale, is from the passage into which the water pump discharges. I'd expect a good stream of water from there. Does the owners manual give no helpful guidance?

The thermostat would be easy to inspect and test.

I guess the other outlet you refer to is the exhaust back pressure relief port ???
I note the engine has a plug that can be removed in order to fit a flushing hose connector. Have you connected a hose and established that you get a good water flow through the engine ?

Unless someone with intimate knowledge of the 4 stroke Johnson comes along I suggest you post your query on the Johnson & Evinrude board of the iBoats forums
http://forums.iboats.com/johnson-evinrude-outboards-24/ If you do be sure to also state the year or the model number
