In Holland at the moment, engine overheated yesterday, anchored and changed impeller with genuine Johnson. All now ok but I now only have a Jabsco spare impeller which has 10 vanes instead of 6 on the Johnson. Same diameter and width - so will this be ok? Can't get a Johnson Impeller locally but plenty of Jabsco. Beta 25hp engine, original Jabsco pump replaced with Johnson pump a few years back.

I've struck this before: apparently the number of lobes can change on replacement parts.

both will supply the same quat of water, i use what is available & carry many spares. You might have HE issues if cooling is poor

Thanks coopec and Old Harry. I do have a new Jabsco on board + another with one vane missing, but I'll get another locally. The failed Johnson Impeller did not disintegrate but all the vanes had partially sheared at the vane root, so no bits floating around the cooling system.

As a matter of interest how old (or how many hours) was the failed one. I usually fit a new one each spring, but the old ones always seem to be good and I keep them as back-up spares.

Update - now got new Jabsco 6 vane impeller! Identical to original Johnson. Rafiki - to answer your Question, the impeller was removed for winter & refitted in the spring, appeared ok with no signs of vane root cracking so replaced. Done approx 35 hrs this year, probably 2/3yrs old. It did 20hrs continuous running on trip here but plenty of water flow. Just suddenly failed as getting near a lock(overheat alarm) so anchored and replaced impeller.
