Hi folks,
I have just bought one of these wee 2 stroke Johnson Colt 1.2 outboards for my bairns boat, and it runs well, but aint pumping water and will overheat if left running. I havent cooked it tho, Im too careful for that! Theres no pee hole visible, is there one?
I would like to buy a replacement impeller as the first course of action and fit it, where in the UK would I buy said impeller from? A search has yielded nothing for that engine.
Model number is:- BJCOCCM
Serial number is:- B 7638685
Made in Belgium.

Any ideas on the year etc??

Any experiences?

Thanks:)

1988

B= made in Belgium
J= Johnson ( E= Evinrude)
Normally followed by a number to denote the HP but in this case CO = Colt ( if it had been an Evinrude it would have been JR = Junior)
CC are the date letters for '88
M= is just a production Suffix

Outboards-Direct (AKA Oakley Marine) in Brighton have given me good service. http://www.outboards-direct.co.uk/

Willsmarine, in Devon also have a good reputation. http://www.willsmarine.co.uk/

No telltale but if all is well you get a spray of water out of the exhaust relief port on the leg.

You may have to separate the power head from the leg to dig out the crud at the top of the water tube. Possibly also remove the head to dig out the water passages in the head and the block, but see if you can get wter through it from a hose while you have the gearcase off.

The drive shaft may be stuck ( rusted ) into the crankshaft. That will make it difficult to get the gear case off to access the pump.
Lightly grease the splines when you reassemble it

BTW DO NOT undo the screw on the top of the engine cover ... it holds the rewind starter. If you undo it the whole lot will fly apart releasing the spring like a caged tiger. ( no I have not done it but plenty have)

Done that - on a sandy beach! Needed a new tee-shirt after wiping all the grease and sand off the spring whilst rewinding and re-greasing it...

The little beast was quite impressive considering its low rating, but it rattled like there was an inch of slack in the main bearing. Gave it to a friend who stripped it to check, found nothing wrong and it has run like a sewing machine ever since - d'oh! The only real problem area was the tendency for the gubbins around the coils needed regular spraying as they would rust. Not too surprising as it had been skinny dipping a few times.

Rob.

Cheers

Thanks for the help and words of wisdom guys.
The engine is only for my bairns boat. Its a 10foot plywood skiff sailing dinghy that I made for him to learn to sail with. The engine was bought for £20, so even if it was a duffer (which it aint!), not much would have been lost.
VicS, Cheers man, I will contact those guys asap and get a new impeller in the post. The engine will be stripped, cleaned and re-built in due course.

I have a Suzuki DT8 to repair and tune-up first. Then theres the Yamaha 5BS aircooled outboard that needs a clean up and the pull start repairing, and the Seagull 40 minus that needs new piston rings. Sooooo many engines, soooooo little time......... (but every one WILL run again, and none cost more that £20!!):D

Thanks all

Well I wish you the best of luck in getting it running reliably.

My memories of that POS include the struggle to refit the recoil spring after it broke at the bent end [ more than once!]. Man that pull start got some serious use!

Repairing a corrosion hole in the side panel on the power head with JB Weld.

Making new gaskets by hand as the local dealer in the US had no spares.

Getting shocks off the speed control lever any time it was humid. Watching the paint peel off the poorly prepped steel work.

Spending a week on a lower end strip [ every bolt was seized ] to find out why it would run without turning the prop. [Stripped splines cure more JB Weld ]

But most of all almost always rowing home after it refused to start in the rain. This despite always carrying WD 40 and spraying liberal amounts on the ignition gubbins.

It was enough to make one wish for a Seagull.

Holy keich, Wishing for a Seagull before the wee Colt, now there you go!!!;)
Sounds like you had a bit of an experience with a friday afternoon motor there. My one is like new, and even started with the same petrol that was in the tank when I got it. The guy said it was only used a few times from new, and certainly not in the last TEN years!!!
I got it home and plonked it into the wheelie bin for a test, and pulled it a few times to see if it turned over OK before giving it a new plug and fresh fuel. It sparked into life and ran sweet after two pulls!!

I hope it will run ok for my wee lad, but like you say, the rings in the 40 Minus Seagull will be getting replaced sooner rather than later if it doesnt!! lol:)
