Hi to all

I recently saw a near new 6 hp 4 stroke Johnson advertised at what seem to be a reasonable price

Looking on the net it appears that Johnson outboards are no longer produced

Any experiences or thoughts on this engine would be appreciated

Johnson is owned by Bombardier and used to be part of OMC along with Evinrude. The engines were basically the same - just different branding. Bombardier have recently stopped selling under the Johnson name and just use Evinrude. According to their website parts and service for Johnson branded engines are still available from Evinrude dealers.

While evinrude and Johnson were both brands under the bombardier umbrella, the engines were different.

The Johnson 6hp four stroke was in fact the suzuki df6 but painted white. So is still available (branded as Suzuki) and therefore parts should also be easily obtained.

got experience of suzuki DF6, and johnson (9 ish horse though)
DF6 Ive had for over 7 years , came with my Achilles 24. Pushed her very nicely, fuel economy good, in all a very civilised engine ...BUT....
If the one you are looking at has a 'spun hub' arrangement on the prop, and not a shear pin set up, my advice would be avoid like the plague.

As well as using on Achilles, I have had it all last year on my 18' fibreglass coble used for potting, as it balanced the boat better than the 2cyl johnson.

The spun hub arrangement is a set up whereby if the prop strikes something solid, a concentric rubber bush in the prop hub (which transmits drive from shaft to propellor blades) loses its grip, and allows the shaft to spin. Some grip is retained allowing one to limp home, however the owner needs to now buy another prop - 80 quidish.

Ive had 3 props doing this, incidently never after hitting anything, just usage.

In my mind this appalling design feature ruins an excellent little engine; if I could source a conventional shear pin set up then I would do that. Until then, I may go back to the heavy Johnson.

Or buy a seagull : )

This type of prop hub can be bodged back together with the addition of Self tappers into the rubber sleeve, either along the sleeve or across it effectively becoming a shear pin in it’s own right. Not a trick I have actually done but suggested to me on this forum after I had the same issue with a Yamaha 8 prop. If you have 3 duff ones there is a few to try it our on.
 
Yeah, tried that with one S/T screw and it failed, but as you say, nothing to lose really; as I say to me it renders a nice little engine a liability on open water. Will give it another go..
