I have just bought a Johnson 5HP Seahorse 2 stroke out board the model No is J5BFLCRM and serial No B002065 the model label also states OUTBOARD MARINE BELGIUM N.V. BRUGGE BELGIUM
1. where do I get an owners manual
2. How do I find out when it was manufactured
3. How do I get a detailed spec. including the fuel, oils, mix to be used etc

You might be able to order an owners manual from an Evinrude agent. Try Wills Marine in Kingsbridge , or Oakley Marine in Brighton or any other you can find. I do not know if the manual is available or not. They are not available for free download from the internet, at least not officially

CR are the date letters for 1984.
L tells me its a long shaft (20")
BF is for Belgium derated.

Fuel is 50:1 using ordinary unleaded and a 2 stroke outboard engine oil to a TCW-3 specification
Gearcase oil is outboard gear oil SAE 80W-90 or 75-90 to API spec GL5 (by using an outboard gear oil you will benefit from additional inhibitors which will give some protection against the effects of water ingress.

(you fill outboard gear boxes from the bottom until it overflows from the top.)

Now if by derated they mean its a derated 6 hp then I may be able to help with the manual if you cannot obtain one.

Suggest you read the article on "Awakening a sleeping outboard" HERE and any others that look relevant.

For technical help you wont beat the iBoats forums if we cannot help here.

PS
Tried to check on the plugs for you but a 5hp is not listed for 1984 . I would use Champion QL86C or QL77JC4 gapped at 0.030". Or L86C or L77JC4 if you do not want suppressed plugs

If you really cannot get Champions then NGK BZ7HS-10 (suppressed) or B7HS-10 (unsuppressed)

PPS it might be possible to uprate it to 6 hp if you wanted. It may only be downrated by a restricor behind the carb. They both use the same 164 cc engine!

VicS is as usual the perveyor of all knowledge on these outboards. He sorted me out with my 1984 4hp. But I took it further and managed to source a manual covering most models from the USA. Its on the boat at the moment but if you get stuck PM me with a full list of your needs. I will photocopy the bits you need. Cant do the lot , its 2ins thick.

Checked now and my manual actually covers the 5hp as well as 6 and 8. But it is just the owners manual not a workshop manual.

In some cases the 5,6 and 8HP are essentially the same engine. Yours if it is one of these family will be 2 cylinder with either electronic ignition or magneto/points ignition. If it has points ignition you will need to make or buy a flywheel puller PM me fro details. If it has points ignition the plug leads come from under the flywheel. If it has electronic then each plug lead comes from a coil block with another block of electronics. Yes the electronic box can fail.
Being old you will need to ensure the gear lever is free to move easily and the bolts to remove the bottom of the leg are free to be removed. (don't put any stress on them as they will snap off like cheese)
Take out the bottom 4 bolts and the gearbox/pump etc will provide a gap of about 1cm. This is achieved by putting the gear lever forward to pull the gearbox into forward then as you pull the bottom end away the gear lever moves to the reverse position. (or is it the opposite)
Through the gap you will see a clamp 10mm bolt on the gear push pull rod. Remove the bolt and the push pull rod should detatch.
The main drive shaft is removed by rotating the engine/prop shaft until the shaft pulls out of the power head.
Now you have gearbox seperate and can open up the water pump. The impeller and cover slide up the shaft to remove. I bought a kit for water pump fairly recently at reasonable price. This has a new cover impeller and rubbing plate. If you have any doubts on water pump performance.

Incidentally you will see in the leg a copper pipe with a chamfer. This is water from pump to engine. I find a garden hose attached to this pipe will give good flow out the tell tale and the exhaust muffler cavity. It is a good test of engine blockage or pump failure.

When reassembling you have to guide the shaft into its spline in the power head.get the copper pipe to enter the rubber sleeve on the water pump then get the gear rod to connect. All a bit tricky I do it with engine upside down on the floor. The copper tube seems to have a habit of blocking on mine and I poke it out with rigging wire. (every season it seems)
Put all bol;ts back with lots of grease or duralac
If the gear lever is stiff PM me as I have developed a fix. good lcuk olewill

Yes the 5 6 and 8 hp from this era are all essentially the same engine; 164cc twins.
I still have copy of the sales brochure!
There are however some differences. I know for example that the 6 & 8 crankcases are different so its not a viable proposition to uprate a 6 to 8hp. I'd bet that the 5 could easily be uprated to 6 though.

They have CD ignition, and yes the power pack can can fail /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Good tip to make sure the gear lever is free although there is a grease nipple on there.

You are wrong about dropping the lower unit. Quite right about the bolts but the shift rod is all one piece and simply pulls out from the mechanism at the top with no joint to undo! It is not a push pull mechanism either, the rod turns on these to select the gears so the mechanism at the top and in the gear case is totally different.

However you do remind me that it is vital to remove the LU and extension piece of long shaft models together and separate them only after cleaning up the drive shaft. The reason is that there is a bush in the extension through which the drive shaft cannot be extracted until it is cleaned up. Any attempt to remove the LU on its own results in the drive drive shaft being pulled out of the LU and the water pump impeller key damaging the top of the water pump on the way.

There is no pin at the top of the drive shaft that has to be guided through a slot on these models so the drive shaft should simply pull out of the crankshaft but as far as I remember there is no O ring to prevent water getting into the splines either!

I have not had any trouble with the water tube itself blocking but the rubber grommet at the top has caused problems on a couple of occasions as already mentioned.

Your experiences may be different because you have a different year model or there may be differences between the European and Australian built models. Mine like the OP's is Belgium built! These were a new design for 1984 I believe.

Pay attention to the grommet if you have occasion to strip the engine or if it overheats.
This is the water tube going into the powerhead ,once the leg is removed (it's an 8hp but differences are small)

and this is it with the exhaust tobe on the power head removed. You can see it has welled up and constricted the water passage.

looked at from above it looks like a horses arse

For the sake of a few pence it needs changing.

As Vic says Wills Marine know exactly which gaskets you would need to replace to do the job. But if the cooling is fine, don't bother.

Thanks Vic I have no doubt you are correct about model differences (especially the gear shift) No my long shaft doesn't have a bearing in the extension.

regards as always olewill

Thanks for the help and the offer of more. I will try the suggested sources first. I also hope I wont need to do any more than service the engine as it was said to be in perfect working order. Regards, John

For spares in the UK others have found www.willsmarine.co.uk in Kingsbridge very good.
Other sources are www.outboards-direct.co.uk (Oakley Marine) in Brighton and www.outboardservices.co.uk in Lostwithiel

MarineEngine.com also have forums for obtaining help etc but the forums at iBoats where I already sent you to read the engine FAQs http://forums.iboats.com/ are vastly better.

The parts lists at http://shop2.evinrude.com/ext/index.aspx?s1=fe734c8d0d019e57d43e69c77c477f81
or
http://epc.brp.com/default.aspx?brands=ej&lang=e

will enable you to identify the parts you need and get the part numbers

Re: Johnson 5hp 2 stroke outboard - Gearbox

I have a Johnson 5hp 2 stroke outboard. I hit the mud at Easter in Chichister Harbour and the the outboard got stuck in forward. The forward gear and some other parts need replacing and my mechanic says new parts will make it too expensive. He has not been able to find a gearbox and suggested I find one or replace the outboard.

Anyone know where I could get a replacement gearbox ? Paddy
