I am having a problem with my 3.5 hp Johnson outboard 2001 model J3RTVS1A01.
Gear box oil is leaking from the drain hole in the bottom of the gearbox, it is gear box oil. I am sure the oil is leaking out via the seal for the shift rod (it is a forward/neutral only model)
I have dismantled the gear box but cannot find a way to remove the bush and o ring from the gear case. It is located in an almost inacessable place at the bottom of the gear case casting.
Any ideas?

Puzzled by the mention of a drain hole in the bottom of the gear box ( apart from the oil drain hole)

Is the box anything like this one http://www.boats.net/parts/search/B...N. shaft/GEARCASE - 3RT - RTV - RO/parts.html

If so i think you may have to cut a thread in the bush #10 above the O ring to screw something in in order to pull it out .. if you see what I mean

But are you sure its the shft rod seal leaking

Thanks Vic for the idea (and a very quick reply)
Yes that is the one I am trying to remove parts 8 & 10.
Oil is leaking is leaking from the drain hole on the right hand side just above the bulge for the gear box.(Not either of the oil fill holes lower down in the gear box housing) It is worse when the outboard is left in the sun - I thnk that the heat expands the oil in the gear box and it leaks out from the shift seal and drains through the hole (which is intended to drain water fom the leg). The gear box was not overfilled.
I will try screwing something (a rod?) into the bush and report back.

Dont forget there is also a pair of seals on the vertical driveshaft below the water pump #11.

Replace gear shift seal Johnson 3.5 hp outboard

A quick update.
I removed the bush and o ring using an extended 6mm tapto cut a thread in the bush and some 6mm threaded rod and nut as a puller.
I replaced the seal and bush driving them home with a piece of nylon rod with a length of 5mm rod to ensure the o ring stayed central. At the first attempt the oring fell out of the bush and was destroyed.
So far the second attemt seems to have cured the problem.
Thanks Vic for the idea.
