I had forgotten that - as well as writing "Sea Fever" and being Poet Laureate - John Masefield wrote a number of novels, including "Jim Davis" and "The Bird of Dawning". Basically seafaring adventure stories for boys, but none the worse for it.

"Jim Davis" can be found on Gutenberg, though it's not actually out of copyright yet in the UK, as Masefield only died in 1967.

Recommended.

I like ‘Bird of Dawning’ - the plot is a little implausible but I think the account of the race up the Channel is excellent.

Masefield - A Mainsail Haul

After reading the above comments I got this from my local library. Disappointing, frankly, a series of short stories too cliched to be of any interest. Not up to the standard of his poetry, IMHO.Humblebee

Masefield was also a bit of an historian. He wrote Sea Life In Nelson's Time full of snippets of information about "wives" in harbour, medical treatment in battle, rates of pay, and social life in the midshipmens' quarters.

A precursor of similar chapters in NAM Rodger's Command of the Ocean recently published.
