This liveaboard stuff seems great but I really struggle to see how you can possibly make ends meet.

In this 'connected' world a floating office is not beyond anyone's grasp - but what kind of industries can you work in that actually pay their way.

I am stuck thinking that it has to be something like stock trading, spending all day online (and having a significant investment risk and needing to have a vague idea what you are doing) writing novels / articles (and emailing them to your publisher - this being relatively small earner from what I understand).

Casual labour seems to be a bit risky to gamble your future upon, and a bit too seasonal.

I would love to know what you all do to generate a few quid for berthing, diesel and errrr eating!!!!!

I have the boat - just don't know how to afford to live on it!!

Cheers
Stefan

Like Colin I "work" in the oil patch but on a 28/28 day rota. The company also pay my air travel, currently back to Barcelona where my boat is. The trouble is how do I get them to pay my wife's fare every month from the north of scotland??? Any ideas would be considered. No Colin leave the oil patch jokes out fo this!!

Excuse me for asking

Is the oil patch buying up air tickets on 9/11 cause they're cheap or is that you're scheduled crew change day. Chris771 flies on that day as well. My company is sending our entire Brussels office back then too.

We live aboard and work ashore. So for us not the cruising life yet, but we do live aboard preparing the boat for the big day. (still some 9 years to go, I'm afraid)
Meanwhile, we sail weekends and holidays, so we do use the boat as a boat, and not as a house.

Happy sailing

I'm off about the 15th, then back to Mallorca, I won't be in Port Vell, until about last week in Oct. although my berth is booked from 1st Oct. No matter, I'm not paying for any berth in the islands anyway. Whats the name of your boat, I'll look you up when I arrive! We can then NOT talk about the oilfield and maybe have a beer or two, you can help me offload my motorbike! Also I will try and pick your brains for all the places to go and get things done etc. Great having people in place innit!!! Only joking!!

HI,

My wife and I live aboard our boat. We can recommend the lifestyle but it is very different.

We split our time between sailing around and working. We are currently back in the UK, looking for work, after spending a year 'going round' the Med. We found that our costs were about GBP £300 per person per month all found - countiung the boat as a person (moorings, fuel, spares, insurance, repairs etc.....) so we lived happily on £900 per month. I know a lot of other people who live on a lot less (200 per month for a couple and boat) and some on a lot more. Life is much cheaper when you cut your ties but this can be difficult and you need to be prepared to 'pay' extras to agents to get you affairs sorted as you travel around in your moving 'home'.

We were coumputer consultants/programmers but this is impossable to do on th move. We've done boat deliveries, electronics installations, sail repairs and anything else that pays that we can find. If you have the dertimination then you can always find a way to make it work.

Good luck - just go for it - these things usually work themselves out. It is a lot cheaper than you think.

Re: Excuse me for asking

That just happens to be the regular crew change. Not sure what the company will do with these colonials from across the pond, that day, but us humans seem to be allowed to travel!!!

Yet more oilfield \'trash\'

I had no idea so many oilfield trash had such good sense to liveaboard.
Surprised more of you do not work in the norgegian sector: two weeks on, four weeks off. More sailing less drilling!

Re: Yet more oilfield \'trash\'

I do work in the Norwegian sector! But as a service hand, it doesn't work that way, although they now want me to work two on two off, which I don't like, as three and three is much better for time off, when it takes a me a day to get here and a day at least to get home! But regs is regs, especially up here, no matter another 2-3 years and they can stick it where the sun don't shine!

Re: Yet more oilfield \'trash\'

Sod the Norwegian sector I will stick to 28/28 in the med thank you. But it still can take a full day to get back to my mistress if we are in the far eastern med, it also smells a lot.

Re: coumputer consultants/programmers

I'm a bit surprised to hear you can't work on this whilst cruising. Obviously not if you are working on mainframes/large installations etc, but isn't there work for small businesses?
