Archaeologist - FIXED-TERM UNTIL SEPTEMBER 2012 < back to vacancies Added to site:17 February 2012

Salary: £23.018

Location:ST KILDA WORLD HERITAGE SITE.+ shared accommodation on Hirta, St Kilda

Closing date: Friday 2 March 2012

Description
The National Trust for Scotland is recruiting for an Archaeologist based on St Kilda. St Kilda has an outstanding historic environment dominated by 19th & 20th century remains with a time-depth that belies the archipelagos remote North Atlantic position and it is the only mixed heritage site in the UK. Working with volunteers and visitors, this is a rare opportunity to work on a remote and spectacular island archipelago.

The post holder will be required to monitor archaeological remains, undertake practical interventions and supervise volunteers and contractors as necessary; also update the Sites and Monuments Record, produce reports and undertake research; and liaise with Historic Scotland, part-funders for this post, and other partners and stakeholders in the management and conservation of the World Heritage Site.

To be successful in the role, you will have a degree in archaeology or related subject, strong communication skills, be a team player and have a proven track record in field work and conservation, with experience of building recording and practical building skills considered as an advantage. In addition, you will be self motivated and capable of living and working in a remote environment, and on occasion, working alone. The post also includes some weekend and evening work.

Applicants must also be confident in their personal physical abilities as the role requires considerable crossing of remote, rugged terrain in all weathers. Vehicular access to many parts of the island is not possible or appropriate for conservation reasons.

I suspect you wouldn't be spending much of that salary while on station, but you might need a few grand "advance" to stock up with provisions before you go. Or are you thinking of living off seagulls, seaweed, fish & molluscs?

The St Kilda Ranger and the marine and seabird Ranger have food just like you and I. Provisions are brought over on the visiting wild life boats. And where ever you are you normally have to pay for your food.

The salary seems woefully inadequate, imho.

I doubt there is much money in archaeology unless you are indiana jones. Might be wrong though. Personally my feeling is that St Kilda was abandoned for good reasons, and although I would not mind a visit, I would not want to stay. I am sure, howerver, that there are plenty that would.

If I was only a bit younger than 72 I'd go for it! I do have the qualifications.
Archaeology is always a poorly paid profession though.
