Ferreting around the met sites, after Simon's (always welcomed) postings earlier, I came across this one with graphics of the Jet Streams over the UK.

Seems to me to be in a funny direction as we have Northerly surface winds, as I'd expected them to run W to E.

Seeing as how no one else has responded.

Jet Stream is the name given to winds at high altitudes. ie only applicable to Jet aircaft. over 30000ft
As you can see they are quite strong winds.
Here in Australia we have almost constant westerlie jet stream over the southern half.
So much so that a flight from Perth to Melbourne will be scheduled to take about 3 hours while a flight from Melbourne to Perth is scheduled at over 4 hours. Sometimes the difference is even greater.

I don't know much about atmospherics but in a way the jet stream you showed from south to north is part of a vertical rotation resulting from the northerly surface winds. That of course if far too simplistic however ....... regards olewill
