Jet skis - annoying people is ok but ...

Should all be shot (jet skiers, not cuddly dolphins) /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

I thought yotties already were a protected species - at least according to the colregs /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I have some sympathy for the jet skier in this instance...

...actually no. I have no sympathy for the jet skier, but I think the charge is faintly ridiculous.

In my experience dolphins enjoy a fast moving boat and are quite capable of getting out of its way, being far more agile and maybe quicker than a jet ski. If one is bored or bothered it'll simply b*gger off.

I was coming out of Fowey last year when we were approached by a pod of dolphin who played around us while we motored out at about 6 knots. A motorboat passed at speed and the dolphins immediately peeled off from me and went to the moboat. I felt teh skipper should have stopped his engines but they circled round fast while the animals had a whale (/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif) of a time. When they finally stopped so the kids could have a closer look the Dolphins left.

I've witnessed the lifeguards at Fistral Beach in Newquay harassing dolphins with their Jetski's. Don't know if it was for the dolphins safety, or the lifeguards pleasure, but they buzzed around them until they left. Shame. It was nice surfing with a couple of dolphins. Preferable to a couple of lifeguards on Jetstinky's.

agile maybe but quicker I dont think so.

Speed of dolphins is generally considered 25-40 knots max, see here dolphin speed web page

After a quick search on google I confirmed that plenty modern jet skis do 60 knots and several even hit 80+knots.

I think if you were a dolphin these machines would scare the hell out of you

Re: dolphins annoy basking shark

Had a pod of dolphins following the boat off Cornwall in the summer. Suddenly two or three peeled off and headed for the unmistakable fin of a basking shark in the distance, spending a few minutes harassing the poor leviathan. If I'd known about the IRPCS I'd have made a citizen's arrest.

I had a Renault Dauphin once. Not a car you'd buy twice.
