Our boat came with two local charts (around Strangford Lough) and one wide type - Shetland Orkneys and Western Isles.
We bought one for Ligurian and Tyrrhenian Sea at great expense while in France, and this season we're going to need Adriatic Sea too. And eventually Greece ... Turkey, all being well.
At £180 each for a specific area they seem horribly expensive to me, especially as we like to have paper charts too. Some systems seem to have chips that cover the whole Mediterranean - although I haven't checked the price of those - no point as we have this type of plotter, and so no choice.
Yacht Bits advertise "exchange" of charts - for £122 which is a bit better, so we could exchange the Shetland one. I presume this is pukka and that actually it's just a way of discounting? I'd like to hear from someone who's done this and says it's ok.
Is there any other way of getting them at a better price? Do the local ones have any value - they are quite old (2004).
Thanks.

I have just paid £174 for a C-Map max of UK and Ireland for my SH 300i to update this later in a few years I need to sent it away to be re-programmed, my other plotter runs with a Navionics SD card this I can plug into my card reader on my PC and download the updates ok there is a cost but it is more convenient. The moral of the story is be careful what you buy into. Hopefully one day it will begin to standardise itself and I do agree with you that these electronic charts can be expensive for some of the areas they cover.

Jeppesen run a 'club'. Contact customer services and they will send you an application form, joining is cheap. You then get discounted updates and can change the geographic coverage area at the same time for 1 price.
You can keep the same coverage area (size) or change it. They provide a matrix of prices.
Send me a PM with your email address and I'll send the info.

Are you sure? When we first got the boat/plotter I thought this was the case but all they would do was update the chip I had, not change the area. Not surprising I suppose, as anyone who is cruising like us could just keep changing the area instead of buying again. I'll PM you though, and hope you are right. Thanks for replying.
