I have just changed the first fuel filter in the system, (water trap below filter type).

For the second year running , there are three or four lumps of a jelly type substance of about 15mm size on the filter's face .

Is this normal ? . Or do I have a bug problem? . The other filters further down seem to be quite clean.

Replies gratefully accepted.

Sounds like the dreaded bug to me...try a mega dose of biocide but the best and only cure in my view is to steam clean the tanks...unless you get rid of every bit the bug will return!!!! It needs 3 components to breed, water, heat and air. What chance do we really have. Do you keep the tanks topped up??? where do you buy your fuel from??

The solution...

Yes, it sounds like diesel bug. The jelly-like substance is made up of the remains of the bugs. In rough weather, the dead bits of bug can get stirred up from the bottom of the tank, and can clog the filter, causing the engine to stop.

The solution is to add Soltron, which contains an enzyme which eats up the bugs' bodies. Other biocides will kill the bugs, but won't get rid of the jelly-like bodies. I discovered Soltron the hard way - after trying lots of other "remedies". I've been using it routinely for about 2 years now, and I haven't had any more problems with blocked filters.

yes its bugs, you obviously have in your filter the ideal growing medium, water and carbon in the form of hydrocarbon, do the housekeeping bit first remove as much water as you can from your tank/filer etc, then dose with the bug suppresant/killer(sp) of choice and just keep up the above steps in future. Hope you gave the old filter housing a good clean out so that the chance of re infections are kept to a minimum. They propagate by spores which can be passed when refueling or even enter the tank breather from the air so there is little chance of stopping them.

Its allright Mike I do look at PBO forum and buy the mag also.

I Distribute it to the chandlers on the aforementioned web site but if any one needs to ask anything or wants more info then PM me or reply to the post.

Alternatively you could have a look back at October 2003 ( Ithink its that one ) where Pat Manley explains about the bug.

Thanks, and remember to pick up a leaflet when you are next in one of the chandlers.
