Hi All, had a gentle sail yesterday with the wife as crew from Bridgemarsh up to hullbridge for lunch, motoring back (wind on nose) engine tone up and down not the normal Beta hum water flow okay carried on but with an uneasy feeling, about a mile from the marina checked over the transom and a nice flow of steam was being generated. Quickly shut off engine gybe round against the ebb with a small headsail handed tiller to the wife, a quick dismantle of the sole matting /engine cover, top off of the intake seacock removed filter and it was full with jelly fish!remove blockage and all was well, however on this boat which Ive had for two seasons the engine has overheated three times, twice with the wife aboard.
I check the seacock filter about once a month clean through with wire to clean the hull intake
am I unlucky or is this about normal. should I leave the wife at home!
How many times has this happened to you?

In the previous boat, I had a tell tale that went over the side which I used to periodically check for temperature increases as the engine had overheated once previously.
On one occasion, the output was hotter than usual so did as you did and there was at least one jellyfish in the strainer.
I guess it was more annoyed than me!!!

Quiet normal - well it's happened once to me. There is, I think, quite a suction just outside the skin fitting. My problem was when I unscrewed the top of the strainer (think old fashioned bronze thinger-me-jib here), the back pressure plopped it out of the strainer and it quickly slid under the engine in a never to be retreived position. Now keeping it in water there isn't a problem (think MAB wooden boat) but I never worked out what to feed it on. Any suggestions as it must be getting a bit peckish by now? One suggestion from a forumite at the time was to put a crab down there to eat it but I thought the tapping of the little legs would keep us awake at anchor (think MAB no slapping of waves at anchor).

have you got a setup like this:

I haven't had a problem with jelly fish up it, but I did back flush it once with a hosepipe to clear the bronze grille.
