A friend (who is fairly new to sailing) has asked me to help him bring his new boat, a Javelin 30 dating back to the 1970s, back from Cornwall. I don’t know much about these boats, although I am sure there are people on here who do. Can anyone tell me anything about them? What they are like to sail?
 
Wasn't she one of four designs competing in the La Rochelle Half Ton Cup in the Sixties? Others were Hustler 30, Liz 31 and the Arpege - which won and became my own acquisition.

There are several for sale; Boatshed has one with photos of the fin/ & keg underwater profile. Builders Marcon had a good reputation (unless someone here knows otherwise!) but their Sabre and Tomahawk cruising designs were more popular.

It was a Fred Parker design which was briefly successful on the racing circuit before the new post-Ecume de Mer designs came along. I had its smaller sister, a Mystere (from a different builder) which was nice to sail, though with fine ends and a short waterline had obvious shortcomings, though it was fairly vice-free. I would expect most of them to have been raced at one time, though boats of the time were fairly heavily built and had conservative rigs, with a small main and large genoa.
 
The Javelin was the production version of Javelot, his own boat. Javelot was in turn a development of Mistri, a plywood chined yacht of the same overall dimensions. Mistri's predecessor was the Norsue series, the last of which was a Corten steel design.
I am fairly sure about this as I have probably the only Mistri in existence and also the original plans, and have researched the subject in much detail. Sadly the boat although of very sound framing, now needs reskinning and I am not sure I feel up to the task of doing it, even though I am a woodworker and have a well equipped joiner's shop.
I may rethink things in the spring.

I'm interested in the Javelin 30, do you have further information? I've done quite a bit of internet searching without too much look. That is, can find them for sail but no reviews of them.

Javelin 30.....

I used to crew on the Javelin in the 1970's and our boat was 'Scrambler',we raced her on handicap and the owner did Cowes Week and RTIR with some success.
Scrambler was fast and close-winded and as I remember a wet boat in a chop.To my knowledge there were no serious faults found in her;accommodation wasn't brilliant but she has tumblehome which made her seem larger below.
As mentioned above Fred Parker was her designer,and I remember Javelot(she was yellow in colour) and the Mystere also. Also from his board were the earlier Warsash and Hamble One- Design yachts,both recognisable by the step in the sheer line.
Mr Parker was a member of my sailing club and took a keen interest in sailing dinghy design,particularly designing an extreme Cherub 12' that flew downwind,but not so good coming back!!
I've seen a couple of Javelins in recent months on the Hamble so they are still active.

Brought the boat back last May, Falmouth to the Crouch in 4 days with stops at Salcombe, Brighton and Ramsgate. I was impressed with it as a sailing boat, it handled well and was fairly quick and close winded. It had a single cylinder Yanmar which pushed it along quite happily at 5 knots, but which took for ever to slow the boat down in reverse. I wasn’t so impressed with the accommodation, particular when the heads packed up 3 hours after the start. It was all very spartan, and the bunks were too narrow for me - I fell out a couple of times. I thought, for the price, it was an excellent choice for a young man who didn’t mind a bit of discomfort.
 
Javelin 30 Sail plan

A late addition to this thread, but would anyone happen to know where I could find the sail plan for a Javelin 30?

Bonjour, pouvez-vous me contacter. Je possède un morgan Giles 30,5, en contreplaqué qui correspond en tout point aux caractéristiques du Mistri. Pourrions nous échanger sur le sujet. merci
