I have recently acquired a 1992 Catalina 22 (the same one as the US trailer!) and the keel locking bolt appears seized ie will not move in either direction...havn't had the boat in the water yet so this is when still on its trailer but don't see any reason why this would be different when it does go in.
The keel will lower and raise ok but the previous owner said he never used the locking bolt when sailing (on a river whose width was just 2-3 times the lenghth of the boat so very gentle sailing)
Some people have said better not to lock the keel in case of grounding...others say if boat gets heeled over too much in strong wind then danger of keel lifting then not doing its job so capsize more likely. My own view is that makers put it there for good reason ie should be used.
Anyone had experience of seized locking bolts and the remedy.....assume put on some kind of cradle and remove keel to free so might as well have the keel completely overhauled at the same time. any idea of costs for this kind of work? Didn't pay much for the boat so not too concerned about having to do some work on it.
