My Jabsco water pump has started to drip water out of the weep hole. I guess the water seal has disintegrated.
Can I change the seal without removing the shaft?

There are two seals back to back in the pump. There is a space between the two seals. The one nearest the engine is an oil seal, the one nearest the impeller is the water seal. I suppose you could try and prise the seals out by why not just remove the shaft and change the impeller at the same time.

Just adding a bit. When I said back to back, the two seals do not touch, it is just one is put in the opposite way round from the other. Basically the spring side is toward the engine and the other seals spring side is towards the impeller. The gap is to allow any leaks to drip into the bilges and give you warning.

One point is if you do a complete strip down, just be careful you do not nick the seal on the shaft spline.

It's a new impeller. I hope I can just 'hook' the seal out and replace it.

While you're doing work on it I'd replace both seals and bearings. The parts are cheap from a bearing supplier and you've then got a completely reconditioned pump. It's not difficult to do but you do need access to a vice.

Be aware that quite often a leak is not so much due to the seal failing so much as the seal cutting a groove into the shaft. Whilst a new seal might provide a short-term cure it is likely to be short lived if the shaft bearing area is less than perfect. Probably best to strip the pump completely for a close inspection before sourcing the spare parts. If the shaft is good, then the other parts can be obtained much, much cheaper from a bearing supplier than a chandlers!

Thanks for all the advice. I sourced a rubber seal off Asap for £ 11. Needless to say I will take the seal to a local seal suppliers.

I have been mulling this over and decided to take the advice given and rebuild the pump. It's a Jabsco 29450-1101 model. I'm not getting much luck online trying to source the recon kit. Anyone know where I can get it please?

I refurbed my Johnson pump and just asked ASAP for a price for the parts and they sent me the full list of parts required and the cost - IIRC it cost me £110 (shaft, bearings, seals, spacer etc)

You could try asking them for a list of the parts required, they are usually very helpful. Or you could try the Jabsco on-line shop.

Alan.

I use http://www.marine-power.co.uk/index.php for pump parts. Very helpful company and competitive on price.
