I fitted a new toilet in Tam Lin a couple of years ago and noticed that it wouldn't pump in water. Then the engine broke and boat came out of the water and the toilet problem became the least of my worries! To cut a long story short I have now got it to work but can't tighten up the jubilee clips enough to stop water leaking out. I am using proper ridged pipe of the correct diameter and have tried warming it up to make it soft so the jubilee clip can bite into it. I have also tried PTFE tape and using a spanner to tighten the clip but am worried that if I tighten any more the plastic inlet fitting on the Jabsco will crack. Is there a knack to doing this? Can I use the softer clear plastic hose instead as I feel that this will seal more easily? Is there something that I am missing?
I have searched the forum index which helped me solve the pump in problem but can't find anything about the pipe work!

How are you tightening the Jubilee clips? I couldn't tighten mine enough with a screwdriver but a small spanner/socket did the job. If you are using the right hose (off hand I don't think mine was ridged) then it's unlikely you can tighten the clip too much with a screwdriver. you will get an extra bit with a socket which may well be enough to stop the leak - it did on mine.

You shouldn't need PTFE tape or anything other than a couple of jubilee clips, done up with a 7mm socket on a ratchet but too tight and you'll break the plastic on the pump. How rigid is this rigid hose? Mine's thicker than the clear stuff commonly used for fresh water but still fairly flexible. Should be 19mm and be a very snug fit over the spigot on the pump with getting it on made easier by the application of heat. If it's actually rigid rigid and you didn't expend at least a bit of effort putting it onto the spigot on the pump you may have got the wrong hose.

Is your problem with the 38mm waste hose or the 19mm water hose? If the former then the ridged stuff is the wrong type to use. I replaced some on my boat with Vetus sanitation hose. For the small diameter water inlet plain 19mm bore hose made of fairly soft white plastic with a wire wound within it to resist kinking is the stuff to use.

The hose I bought from Lee Sanitation was soft enough to thread through very restricted passages and easy to make leak free with one jubilee clip. I have had sealing problems in the past with chandlery bought hose that was hard and difficult to seal.

Yes, I am using a spanner. I bought the hose from the local chandlers but I can't now remember whether I asked for sanitation hose or just picked it out myself. It is supposed to be 19mm or 3/4 inch but it slips over the spigot very easily, perhaps it is too big. It is quite rigid. I did get some black for the outlet pipe and that doesn't seem to be leaking. Perhaps new hose is the answer. Anyway, thanks guys!

It is the inlet hose, sounds like the stuff I've got is too hard.

If the joint leaks, perhaps you need a syphon break between the pump and the bowl as well as a good seal at the joint, which I would expect to be above sea level.

Are you sure you don't have a split in the plastic housing ? I had and it took some spotting.
