Hi,

Having stripped and cleaned the toilet, (100% limescale remover from Harpic or similar removed the scale), including fitting the service kit, SWMBO wants an electric one.

I've bought the kit and 5m of Red and Black wire, (8mm2 #6), along with some waterproof conduit tube.

The kit includes a 25A fuse near the toilet, but I have been advised to fit a 35A fuse near to the battery end of the wires in case of a short circuit, so I've bought a 35A breaker switch.

I'm just looking for some confirmation that it's OK to use a breaker switch rather than an in-line fuse, and also wondering whether I need to fit the breaker in some kind of panel?

Also, with this thickness of wire, any sugestions for a crimping tool which will cope with #6.

Many Thanks

Richard

No problem with a breaker instead of a fuse. Its usual to fit breakers to a panel, although I've seen them fitted in some onscure places as well. The problem is that if it is hidden away, you might forget where it is when the toilet stops flushing one day. Any reason why you shouldn't fit it to your electrical panel with a proper label?

Crimps for larger wire sizes are expensive, but available from places like Merlin Marine, or Index Marine. See the bottom of this page. You could try soldering and then using self amalgamating tape or shrink tubing, or taking the wire (cut to the correct length) to an electritian and getting them to crimp them for you for the price of a beer or so?

Breaker instead of fuse is fine. Wire size is determined by the round trip distance from the power source (battery). It's VERY important that the toilet be on its own dedicated circuit, shared by nothing else that can pull power away from the toilet...'cuz low voltage will damage the toilet motor. Read and follow the installation instructions carefully.

Be aware that particular toilet is VERY noisy and draws a whopping 24 amps...compared to 16 for most other raw water electric macerating toilets. IMO there are better choices for the same or even less money.

Beleive me the best thing you can do is take it back to the chandlers. The converssion is surely the worst invention yet created by man.

I gleefully threw out my electric and now have the silent bliss of a manual pump. I've got some spares left for the conversion unit - Gaskets, microswitch, screws etc if you're interested.
