Jabsco Pump Guard - not suitable for bilge pump?

Following discovery of an internal leak (tap/shower flexihose joint) and fairly full bilge I tried to pump out with the electric pump. The Pump Guard clogged twice preventing pumping out. Removal and cleaning the filter rectified the issue and not a problem in the safety of my marina berth. Had this been at sea and a failed seacock, prop shaft seal or hull puncture things could have been very different.

I assume the pump and filter were original Jeanneau installations - are filters acceptable on bilge pumps?

thanks

Not in my book. A cage some distance away from the pump and surrounding it may be.

A suction strainer protects the pump from ingesting anything that might damage it. Every pump should have one. When it clogs it is doing the job it was designed for.

A fine filter is not necessary. A strum box intended for bilge pump use has slots that hold hard/ large objects but will allow dust and small particles that will not harm the pump to pass.

Thank you. The Jabsco Pump Guard is a fine mesh, presumably gauged to protect the Jabsco pump. The blockage material appeared to be fine material possibly paper, grit, dust, food, hair (all the stuff that has fallen through the gaps in the cabin sole panels). I think my boat must have had a dirty past!
I do have a sump and the the bilge pump take up sits just above the bottom of the sump so maybe a strum box is unnecessary?
thanks again
