Hello,

I have just returned from the boat were I have been getting things ready for "the season".

The boat had been winterised from me getting it so I hadn't noticed that the Jabsco manual toilet doesn't appear to be working.

"I think" the setup is a toilet with a pipe that goes under the boat to draw water in (there is a sea cock on this pipe). The other pipe, I presume goes to the holding tank in the engine compartment.

The boat is out of the water so I know I can't draw water in. But I followed the instructions to prime the unit by filling it 1/2 full with warm water and with the switch set to "Dry Bowl" I pumped the handle and nothing appears to happen.

I pump it ever more frantically and the water level just seems to go down then back up. I went and got one of them "blast un blocker" type things and tried this and it basically does the same thing as the pump. Im presuming it can only be a blockage on the way to the holding tank or have I forgot to do something else ?

Hello mate. Long time no speak, how's it going?

Is the holding tank full ? nope it's empty (and clean, I opened the cap and had a good sniff lol)

Is the plunger stiff to operate ? It's not stiff (unless ya put it in wet bowl and leave the stop cock off), it has a little resistance but not much in the dry bowl position.

Could the holding tank breather be blocked ? I wouldn't know about that mate. Daft question - Where would I find it.


I did notice when I pumped it that even after id stopped the water seemed to swirl about in the bottom of the pan. Don't know what that could be indicative of though.
 
It is likely the plunger in the pump has dried out, undo the top of the pump and withdraw the plunger not unlike a bicycle pump, spray with WD40 and replace it should work.

I wish to hell I had posted this question whilst still at the boat. 200 mile round trip to test it.

Wouldn't he get the same result if he splashed a few drops of baby oil into the pan and flushed it a bit ? I do this twice a season and the flush mechanism seems to work fine.
 
Smear with your plunger with white grease /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

There'll be a pipe venting the tank - probly connected near/at the top of the tank - which should exit through the hull - just the same idea as the one from your fuel tank. There should be a stainless steel/plastic fitting on the outside to both 'pretty' the thing up and keep out the creepy-crawlies. You may have to follow the pipe from the inside to have a chance of identifying it on the outside..........

Stating the bleedin' obvious, you can't pump 'stuff' into the tank unless the air displaced has an escape route. That's the breather. If the tank's been filled, sometimes a lump of paper can become stuck in the top of the pipe. This then dries and forms a surprisingly effective bung. (Trust me - I know this to be true............. /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif).

Not saying that's definitely the answer, but could be worth checking.

Another alternative is a simple air lock.

I'd stick a teaspoon of baby oil in there first and see if that makes a difference. (True Yorkshireman - always start with the cheapest option /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif).

Don't confess to know sh%T, but I do know that Take 5's boat is on the Hard.
Yep I know it has a holding tank.
Does this type of system have to have water sucked in?
Ie does the boat need to be afloat? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
 
Nah K. - as long as there's water in the bowl - which he says he's poured in - it should flush through to the holding tank.

It's true that it can't pick up water on the inlet side whilst it's on the hard (specially with the seacock closed !), but it should still flush O.K..

I wouldn't use WD40, a mineral oil, with rubber/neoprene seals.

Pour vegetable oil into bowl and pump vigorously, if in water, or dismantle the pump and smear with vegetable oil when out of the water.

What ever happened to the Head Mistress?
 
Agreed the joker valve acts as a non return valve (hence yer waters going down then coming back up) You need a service kit for approx £25.
PS - Dont put anything other than veg oil down the bowl or it will rot the seals.
