Lots of pix of the Inland Waterways Associations Canalway Cavalcade 2014 at Little Venice this weekend. What a pity we don't have a community event like this for cruisers on the Thames:

https://twitter.com/IWA_UK

Can you imagine many Thames Cruisers taking half their holiday to get to such an event and then the other half to get back again. Such Rallies have gone off the radar on the Thames unfortunately - due to lack of support and sky high costs.

Yes, we lost the TVR... but we still have the ATYC Rally in August in West india Dock. No boat handling competition this year, but there will be Kayaking Sailing & Canoeing available (with instruction if required) for Adults & Children. There will also be Lizard boat racing (similar to Dragonboat racing) plus BBQ, Dinner Dance and much more.

The ATYC has a new Chairman and a bunch of new people on the Committee.... why not give the new look Rally a try?

But it's up here on the non-tidal we need lots going on and more awareness for the general public of the importance of boating to the economy of the river. I sincerely hope the ATYC achieve their target for boats attending but it is really sad that the ATYC rallies have been priced or otherwise effectively excluded from their traditional venues - particularly Henley - on the non-tidal stretch which would likely attract the greatest number of attendees.

We went yesterday by train. Spent the morning/noon at the Cavalcade at Little Venice and then took the 3.00pm Waterbus to Camden Lock. We spent the rest of the afternoon at Camden Lock Market. You won't starve there will you. :) A really good day out and good weather.

I had spent the week on the Solent which was really quiet and a bit damp!

I went to the last two, and they were great. TVR died because there were insufficient people prepared to run it as some of the clubs that ran it went into a decline.

I heard it was more lack of participants. Figures dropped from well over 100 boats in the most popular years to around 50 when they folded. My information is alas second hand gossip.

If I recall correctly, after the last one, and following the demise of Harleyford, none of the remaining clubs wished to host the following year - end of ........

Anyway, my comment was specifically relating to the lack of any sort of general entry waterway festival event on the non -tidal, not specifically club rallies.

I am now going to be really radical and go down to the marina to have a sandwich lunch on the boat - remains to be seen as to whether we will venture forth for an hour or three.

I hear what you say Tony but TVR and ATYC both ran the closest one got to the I.W. one so it is natural the thread gravitated that way.

It was a shame Harleyford folded, what always puzzled me was that the Upper Thames MYC refused to be involved they are after all one of the most influential clubs on the Thames and could have been the driving force. I believe this refusal was all down to (in my opinion) an imagined slight many many years ago.

Did that in reverse a year or two ago. Really fabulous day out. Camden Lock is such a vibrant place and as you say, has an excellent choice of food.
