I've got rusty engine mounts

I\'ve got rusty engine mounts

Superficial but unsightly rust on engine mounts and supprorts - was going to get some hemorite rust remover and then paint over with hemorite shiney black paint.

Does the panel think this to be the correct approach?

No. Paint them green to match the engines.

Hi Nick
Have just done this job. Used wire brush/chisel then some jenolite equivalent, hammerite red oxide primer and hammerite top coat (two coats). Can let you know how well it works in a few years! Nic

Nick, don't use Hammerite or Hemorite which I believe is for your Farmers /forums/images/icons/smile.gifHammerite chips and is quite brittle. Clean mountwith a wire brush until it's reasonably clean, then get some Jenolite and follow the instructions, use a decent zinc primer either spray or brush and finish with a copule of coats of paint, either spray (I use Plasticote) or brush, best is Japlac.

No. Use hammerite. I painted some lamp posts in it 15 years ago and they still have not gone rusty. /forums/images/icons/smile.gif And the 45gallon extra fuel tank on the boat. Thats not gone rusty either. It must be good if farmers use it. They dont use nowt that dont work...../forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

Look very carefully at the engine mounts and in particular the bolts holding the engine onto its mounts. I had a Princess a while back where the starboard engine literally fell of its mountings in the middle of the E Channel due to corroded bolts shearing, causing the prop shaft coupling to break and the only thing stopping the shaft falling out of the bottom of the boat was a jubilee clip. When I looked at the port engine, 3 of the 4 bolts were sheared as well
Needless to say, I keep a close eye on engine mountings these days

Originally, they were mild steel but after my incedent I found that Volvo had introduced a mod kit for that particular engine (71A) with much larger bolts in s/s

I think it came from Homebase, certainly one of the big DIY stores, Wilkinsons keep it as well.

I believe that S/S has a lower tensile strength than of normal steel, and is therefore not used for applications of high shearing forces such as engine mounts etc.

In this particular application is it rust resistance or sheer strength that is important?

All good advice above but i took mine off one at a time a couple off years ago with no futher problems, as they rust underneath.I used a sissors jack and wood blocks. {Mercruiser)
