Hi Derek,

An ASCer!

Nidri's super touristy which is nice if you like that kind of thing. We had a cracking tacky night out there.

The book you need is Heikell "Ionian".

The best place we found was an anchorage on the Southern Tip of Meganisi behind Kithros. Spectacular but not very sheltered.

If you like deserted Anchorages for Beach BBQ's all around Frikes, Ithaka are a number of Bays - you're sure to get at least one to yourself.

Apart from that:
Akoto, Cliff Bay, Cephalonia, Kalo Limani are Ok.

I'd have though with all that time you could easily work round to the North Ionian.

Re: I\'ve booked a holiday!!! Anyone been to Nidri?

Buy yourself Rod Heikell Ionian pilot. Not only will it answer most of your questions but will whet your appetite! In 2 weeks you could do both the Inland Sea (broadly south of Nidri) and go north towards Corfu. Be prepared for plenty of motoring, but it gets the beer cold and the water hot for a shower after your lunchtime swim.

Berthing backwards is no problem if you have booked a modern boat (Bav or Benny are the most common). Get your charter company to show you how. Its mostly commonsense and working to a plan.

Enjoy

Berthing backwards is strange, prctice going backwards onto a buoy and tie up to it and ALWAYS give yourself a lot more room than you think and DONT go to slowly, also, if you can , get behind the wheel so you are facing the quay and it is a lot easier that way

Re: I\'ve booked a holiday!!! Anyone been to Nidri?

Best to check on whether you berth forwards or back. When we were there the quays had so much debris against the walls that bow first was required. You tossed the anchor over the stern and paid out the warp with one turn round a genoa winch, then stop when the crew at the bow calls!

The charter company will advise.

Berthing backwards......the trick is not to drop the anchor too soon (or of course too late!). I have seen quite a few cases where the anxious skipper has called the drop early so that the boat ends up at the bitter end and tantalisingly short of the berth. Unless its a deep anchorage ,three boatlengths from the berth should be about right. (lets see, 12m yacht, 5m water gives about 40m of chain. Should be fine)

Re: I\'ve booked a holiday!!! Anyone been to Nidri?

nidri a bit tacky but still ok, have ordered a 46 bav for late july from lefkas, berth bow to if poss, saves damaging the rudder on debris from the quay, they all have kedge anchors in a bucket on the back, chuck it out about 3 boat lengths from the quay and drive her in. get the bow fast then tighten all up to suit, if you go in and see a flotilla stern to then you can do it is well. fiskardo is nice but get in midday to get a spot before the flotties, go stern to there. you will have the time of your life. money wise there is a hole in the wall at fiskardo, nidri, lefkas and parga, forget about it other wise so make sure that you have enough hard dosh with you in between. also take on water at every opportunity!! a full tank of fuel will last 2 weeks.

Did 8 weeks last season and 2 where spent in and around Nidri
The Ionian either north or south is in my opinion some of the best sailing in the med but gets realy bussy in the summer. To keep costs down head for the mainland and for a cracking meal in good company try vliho yacht club. If the crew want swimming pool and sun beds go to the Nielson pontoon - free mooring and use of the pooL ,elec and water a few euros a night .

Re: I\'ve booked a holiday!!! Anyone been to Nidri?

well nidri is cleethorpes in ionian. toss a coin north or south
if you go north. nip into the gulf of amvrakia.its unspoilt and
vonitsa area has the best sailing wind.
go south and you are spoilt for choice.the mainland side around astakos is empty apart from the fish farms. ithaka and cephalonia
towns get busy but the scenery is superb and plenty of empty bays.
enjoy

Do you reckon the following is still a reasonable description of the town? Or has it improved/got worse?

[ QUOTE ]
Nidri A tourist dense town (2/10), with excellent yacht support facilities (8/10) which include sailmaker, engineers, stainless steel fabrication, George's superb chandlery in the high street and Voula's 'Prawns in Tomato sauce' (the latter available at Nick the Greek's, a rare example of an un-reconstructed Greek taverna in this resort). The town setting could be wonderful (8/10), but quayside views are blocked by huge excursion boats and heavy traffic (which chooses not to use the town bypass). Add the neon lights, noise, fast food joints and pushy restaurant touts, and this is an appalling example of bad resort development. For yachts, the quay is crowded and affected by chop. The Neilson quay is better during daytime (just south, off Athos' hotel). Pay at the hotel reception for fresh water or showers. Please move off before 1600 hrs (if asked) to allow the flotilla boats to return. Anchor nearby or opposite in the soft mud of Tranquil bay, a short dinghy hop from town.

Re: I\'ve booked a holiday!!! Anyone been to Nidri?

I think 2/10 is a little harsh. It's always entertaining, which is more than can be said for some of your other 2/10s.

Last year the Neilson quay had areas roped off where the trainee berthers could practise but otherwise we could berth there 24 hours per day except at weekends. Signs on the quay confirmed this.

Nidri Yacht Club has the best food for many miles. I agree with another poster that the food at Vliho YC is pretty good, but not as good as NYC IMHO.

Re: I\'ve booked a holiday!!! Anyone been to Nidri?

So they finally got that bypass built?
Haven't been there for a good while, but the bypass used to be a standing joke. Can't understand why through traffic would choose not to use it, though?

That bypass was completed more than 8 years ago . . .

[/ QUOTE ]

Never did have much sense of time! I've checked and it was '01 when I was last there - so the bypass would have been in place. The fact that I didn't even notice certainly bears out what you say about them not using it...

Re: I\'ve booked a holiday!!! Anyone been to Nidri?

First went to Nidri 27 years ago to windsurf. It was relatively unspoiled. Just sailed past it last year and that was enough!!
If anyone wants a place on land then Aghios Nikitas (just north of Levkas town) or even Levkas town itself is probably a better bet. Admittedly all first aid for sailors is available in Nidri. All very subjective.
