I\'ve been dreading this.

I have never worked out what nm means, I've been dreading asking for fear of general derision (fought in the falklands I think) from all forum members.

But now some one has used it in a thread I posted and its buggin' me not knowing.

So please, put me out of my misery gently.

Re: Hoots of derision!! and another question

it means no message. Fancy not knowing that! I learnt that ooh, ages ago. Last week sometime.

Anywa, I also have an embarrassing question, regarding knots: How do you make those yottie entrance mats which are made of a single long piece of line woven in and out, about 3 feet by 4feet? I expect everyone knows, but I simply haven't dared to ask until burgundyben kindly broke the ice.

Re: Hoots of derision!! and another question

Management made one once from instructions in a book on knots. Very twee, and uses thousands of metres of rope. Sadly, I unpicked it and used the rope for something more interesting. Now realise it would have looked at home on the new Oundle Trawler...

Oh dear, sir. And another question...

Shame on you BurgendyBen. Now seeing as you've broke the ice as it were.

When I turn the Port engine key there is a rumble from the back of the boat followed by what sounds like a large diesel engine running? Is this normal

So you unscrew this, and put it safely here, then oopps...
All - IMHO, BTW, FWIW and NWGOI

Re: nothing to worry about

the starboard one will do the same.

Also, as you set off, everyone will wave madly, and you'll hear a sort of grinding or scruchning noise, but it's just the effect of being very close to the land, possibly to do with gravity - exactly the same thing happens in all marinas, whether you are leaving or arriving.

Re: nothing to worry about

Followed closely by a "peeeerrrrTWANG" as the shore power lead reaches the limit of its extremity.

All perfectly normal and nothing to worry about.

So you\'ve done it too?

I set off, still connected and pulled the wire out of the plug on the land end, tripping the whole pontoon. Next time I'm going to order an extra long one so that it can reach from Portsmouth the Isle of White!

Re: So you\'ve done it too?

If you get an extra long curly-wurly one it will stow much more easily and tidily onboard and then you will not need to use the engine on the way back.....remember to make bow fast to pontoon at IOW before stopping engine, or you'll be homeward bound before you've finished the outward passage.

On the other hand ignore my ramblings, just miffed cos I'm due to collect new boat tomorrow and they have not wired up the bowthruster yet.

Re: Dunno....

I cant even splice a piece of string onto a fender without it looking like the cat got at it. Wonder if Kim can start a special string school forum, with drawings and things.

No one can force me to come here-----------
