Had 15 boats (ish) out on Dreadnought reach yesterday, taking our Starlight Charity guests for a much anticipated jolly on the Upper Thames day. 200 yards upstream was the longest fishing pole ever seen..no problem, rivers wide there. But upstream of Better Boating, 2 men with 6 rods in use cast almost across the river, not so lucky when the rod was whipped straight off and under a Broom. The skipper managed to retrieve the rod before it smashed into the prop shaft. The gentleman of possible East European extraction said third time today!
Commercial fishing??

The carp will thank him if he didn't.

Those amazingly long fishing rods have been around since ancient times, known as roach poles, basically the simplest of fishing equipment with no reel. Most frequently found in canals to catch small roach, bleak etc during competitions to catch most fish in shortest time.
Designed to catch teeny weeny fish fast with no tedious reeling in etc.
Any carp recently out of nappies would break the rod and tackle in seconds. :)

You are way out of date OG. The modern match angler uses a pole to catch carp up to 20lbs in commercial fisheries. Usually needs over 100lb to win.
