I am not sure he is reluctant. It's the doctors that keep sticking things into him that keep him alive.

Not being a pios sort myself, I still wonder how much the prayers of his flock are doing to keep him going?

He is setting a bad example. If the chief honcho is so reluctant to depart this mortal coil what kind of message does it send to his flock. What is he afraid of or does he know something they dont.

I'm sorry for the poor old bloke !

Not that I'm of his persuasion, or any other for that matter, but as world leaders go, he's streets and streets ahead of some others that come to mind !

I hope it all works out for him as he thinks it will ! !
(does that sound daft from a non-religious bloke?)

Those are kind sentiments for a bloke who is materialy responsible for a few million deaths in africa because of his stance on condoms.

He should revert to the cathar or alberginesian heresy and starve himself to death. I have not seen any reports of him refusing treatment.

I don't agree with his stance, but I don't think that you can blame him for the lack of use of condoms in Africa. AFAIK, it's a cultural thing were the men believe it's their right to fertalize a women. Being fertile also proves their manhood.

Re: Dead Pool

Stingo you are right that there are cultural issues with the use of condoms however there is a large uneducated part of the population who are devout catholics. Their stance disempowers the woman who wish to refuse sex without a condom. It is difficult enough for them as it is.

Withhold food and water.....?

Sometimes, I think we fail to remember that they are men. Just men.

Personally I was/am more moved by the Terry Schiavo situation. I was not for keeping her alive at all costs but I believe it is cowardice to have let her die through "sins of omission". Somebody will probably now absolve himself for the responsibility for her death. I believe that it would have been 100 times better to have applied euthanasia for a quick painless release rather than the slow torture of dehydration over 13 days. Hopefully being brain dead she would not have experienced distress but do we really know this? I wish somebody would explain to me why it is morally more acceptable to kill sombody by withdrawal of food and water than by injection.

Why I am going on about this is that it is I believe common practice everywhere and was even hinted at in my mother's case.

How to go?

Having had a few friends and close relations suddenly pass away this winter sort of sobers you up a bit, so apologies if I sound a bit serious for a Friday, but there's no such thing as a good way to die. As Woody Allen answered when asked "where would you like to be when you die?" .... "Somewhere else".

Also, I've never met anyone who could confirm that any of the available routes are painless.

And you are never likely to. Having almost drowned my experience was quite pleasant while I was underwater and had give up. Once I surfaced it was a different matter.
