I am seriously considering upgrading my DV10 to a DV20 but this will mean an increase in engine weight of about 130lbs (I hope the euro police are not watching - I used pounds instead of kilos). Anyway, my boat is an East Anglian sloop, 28' LOA, 8' beam and 4' 6" draught (there go those units again). The engine sits low in the hull with the very top of the engine about 6" above the waterline.

I am hoping to talk with Alan Buchanan about this but does anybody have any idea if the trim will be seriously affected? or if there will be any other adverse effects?

Looking forward to replies

Why dont you get some more weight (130lbs or so?) to represent the increase, pack it into the same space, and measure the waterline effect. Having done that, go sailing with it in place and see what trim difference you get.
Come back to the mooring, remove weight, make tea, sit on gunwale and pore over result.

Dont forget that an increase in weight will also be required for additional fuel.
Have you considered an alternative engine that doesnt weigh so much, or a halfway house e.g. the nanni 14 hp at 92 kg (based on a kubota) same basic engine as the beta, but tends to be a bit lighter cause they dont add so much weight to make it smoother.

surely it's the difference equivelent to one small additional person in the cockpit - would that worry you?

equally 20m of 8mm chain less in the chain locker

these don't seem big issues but you will be better able to judge
