Just wondered if you could help with the passage from Itchen to Cowes -

Hook then on Starboard side of the precautionary area towards Castle point

then straight to North Thron -> West Knoll -> South Bramble -> Prince Consort -> then heading into fairway between Buoy 1 & 2 towards Cowes?

Or am I better off just following Red Funnel Ferries? will it be basically following the same route as Red Funnel ferries?

Where are you moored in the Itchen? I would suggest you head down river to No1 SG buoy (green) and then head down the east side of the channel off Netley and go past Hamble Point south cardinal. Take a heading of 155 for 2 miles to Calshott north cardinal , the head to North Thorn then go via West Knoll as per your plan and into Cowes via No1.

Don't follow the ferry! On fact my advice is don't follow anybody, do your own plan and take care.

Following Red Funnel isn't just for not doing the planning! it is less choppy cruising behind it as the water is usually dead flat!!! ;)

I did email you David last week to see if we could do this passage together under supervision!

Please tell me this is just a wind up,

Following a ferry?!!!!!!!!!!¡

Before I was born, my parents once followed a car ferry in order to avoid a shoal in an area they didn't know very well.

Bonk! Turns out the yacht they were in had a deeper draft than the ferry :D

I did not get it - sorry. Was it you I had the phone conversation with?

The most important thing is to select your ferry with care, if you select the wrong ferry you could end up in Santander in Northern Spain, and you will find getting back a little challenging

You're welcome to tag along with us next time we go from the Itchen (Ocean Village) to East Cowes

Never mind the piss takers, once you've done it you'll wonder what you were concerned about, just don't try it if it's blowing it's tits off in a small vessel, it gets very lumpy out there.

This is a 40+ footer going across in fresh air in a hurry conditions! those who call it lake Solent may want to think again.
First image is leaving Southampton water the mark is Black Jack.

To those who think following a ferry isn't the right thing; perhaps you may want to give some credit to the skipper of the ferry and his local nav knowledge -

In unfamiliar waters, especially in entering/leaving the harbours etc. I always follow passenger ferries.

The ferries go back again as well. If they didn't there'd be an awful lot of ferries in Santander by now...
