We are in the process of planning a new engine installation in the 'Nellie' SU71. She is a 22ft Itchen Ferry and once had a quarter installation but has since been restored and is again ready for power.
Any advice would be welcome as to how we might best achieve a centre line installation as opposed to a quarter installation.

Why?

To arrange a centre installation, you will almost certainly have to cut through some of the centreline bolts holding the stern together, which seems to me to be a Bad Thing. But then since you are Wicormarine, you already know that, so I'm teaching grandma - sorry.

The other thing is that it is unlikely, in an Itchen Ferry, that you will be able to get all the propeller cutout in the deadwood. You also know that, of course - you are looking at the boat!

A cutout in the rudder is a recipe for ruining the good handling under sail for which the Itchen Ferry boats are so well known - you will, in fact, have completely ruined a good boat!

Put a folding prop on the quarter and she will be just fine. There are certain advantages to an offset prop - the turning circle can be less, for instance.

I would respectfully suggest - rh prop - port side - lh prop - starboard side. My boat is t'other way round and she kicks away from the berth when you give a kick astern coming alongside, which can be disconcerting.

She is almost certainly too small for the all singing, all dancing, twin folding prop, hydraulic arrangement which is the ideal for elderly long keelers.

But I really, really, would not fit a centreline propeller in this boat.

Mirelle - why don't you get off the fence and say what you really think!

I totally agree with Mirelle! We had a morcambe bay prawner, with the same instalation as mirelle suggests, rh prop on port side. She handled fine under power. The problems of a centreline engine installation are immense.

Are you the new owner of Nellie
I have an itchen ferry 22 ft
she has a 2 cylinder kubota with centreline prop
the cut out for the prop is totally in the deadwood.
Installation looks very straightforward.
Only problem is space engine takes up inside cabin.

I need some help with the rig plan
Iam also looking for history and links for Itchen Ferry smacks in general
the mast is 36ft long and I am not sure where all the stays and halyards run from.
Any help would be appreciated

Hello,

I am the new custodian, let us say. We are currently installing a Yanmar 1GM10 on the centreline and it's going very well. We had to take a notch out of the rudder but I think she'll manage it.

You will find some information on the following website:

Wicormarine - Nellie

I think the sail plans are in the pdf file that you can download there. There's a bit of history as well.

As for rigging - I can only say that if you want I can email you a few pictures I took before we unstepped the mast on the Nellie.
