Hi, Is anyone familiar with the marinas and facilities on the west coast of Italy ie East from Menton then south down as far as Pisa, Ligurian Sea area believe, any advice info would be very welcome.
It's beautiful. I have lots info on this area, having been there a few times including this summer. But too much to type it all, would need more specific quesions. Here's a thing I wrote after a cruise there couple of years ago... http://www.ybw.com/forums/showflat.php?C...true#Post834989
JFM's report just sums it up nicely and reminds me of lots of fun times the last couple of seasons.
You could consider the new marina in Genoa as a stop off base but it is a bit noisey and not great on the ole vista but its easy to get a berth at the moment and very reasonable so works as a base and is right next to the airport. Or, you could think of a base at Lavagna just south of Portofino, again not hugely pretty but very reasonable and you are close to all the places you would want to visit.
nautical, are you familiar with this coast? If you based yourself in Genoa, are there other ports and anchorages within easy reach for day cruising?
What about the new marina at Varazze as a permanent base?
JFM has more experience than self but from the two seasons back and forth delivering and collecting .......Genoa, there are some nice places to visit within the day but better if you have a couple of days to get down past Portofino et al and then accross to Corsica, or hang a right and head towards the French coast. Varazze I think is Azimut Bennetti's development and very swish but only probably 20 minutes from Genoa's new marina which is much cheaper. The bit from Savona to San Remo I found a bit boring but gets much better and lovely scenery and places to stop once on your way towards Monaco. Other way towards La Spezia is lovely too and you get a bit spoilt for choice where to stop there are loads of them although mid season it is not so easy to drop in and out of marinas you need to book well in advance.
JFM could give more detail I am sure, I dont tend to hang around, its in, out and gone so no idea what the towns themselves are like.
Great coast. Stop at La Spezia and do the Cinque Terras. You can get a flexible train ticket so you can walk the fabulous cliff route from one village to another then catch a train to the next etc etc
There is a bus from just outside the marina to the train station.
Do a forum search on "Cinque Terras" there were some great photos some time back.
Thank everyone for the info, sounds very nice.
I am considering buying an old boat in the area,[La Spezia ] and was just going to move it away quickly, when I read some of the numbers quoted for berths by JFM in his report, I thought it better be very quickly, however after reading the comments I think I should spend some time there, as long as it is not going to break the bank, can it be done at reasonable cost [any recent prices?] just Marina hopping, no tender with the intended purchase so anchoring may be a problem.
If the old ship proves to be OK, long term intention is to move slowly round to SoF then into the canals.
Thank again.
You'd need to research the costs a bit more maybe. La Spezia main marina is eyewateringly expensive, but there are others around those parts. Portofino is much cheaper - I think €80/night for our boat (18m). If you are living on the boat then you can anchor - Sestri Levant (pic in my report) was for example a good sheltered anchorage. But much of that coast doesn't offer lots of deep bays that make safe overnight ancohrages, and same with E coast of Corsica. W coast of Corsica in contrast is full of zillions of anchorages that would be good overnight stops. I reckon you might have to buy a tender, just to go ashore with rubbish bags and to get food. Can't see how you'd cope sans tender!
