...was outgoing rather than incoming, and (like the giant that got in the news last autumn) was bound for China with a load of our rubbish.

"When the world's largest container ship docked in Britain shortly before Christmas, its vast cargo of goods, from bingo sets to bras, epitomised the scale of imports from China. But when the MS Emma Maersk, dubbed "SS Santa", set sail on its return journey to Yantian, few noticed it was laden with Britain's fastest-growing export to China: waste." (today's Independent)

I wonder if people would flock to the beach to help clear it up?

I and many thousands of volunteers and the Army, did when the Torrey Canyon oil came ashore in Cornwall so I guess if there was a need we'd all go again.

A lot of other people just stayed at home and moaned...

Local news has it that the owners of the beach, The National Trust, has a long list of volunteers awaiting the Go to help clean up the beach along its full length. The MCA is holding them back until the biggest lumps, i.e. containers, have been removed by contractors.
