Today in a local Magistrates Court, the Captain of a "Foreign Flag " bulk carrier was fined AU$1500 for running down a fishing vessel that was fishing along the Australian coast (NSW). Last year.

A crewmember was drowned and allegedly little effort was made to search the area by the bulk carrier.

The Captain was asleep at the time (he was of duty)
The maximum fine possible is AU$2000. That’s how much your life or mine is worth out there. It stinks

Is this just Australian law?

How do these fines/penalties/practices compare with those in other countries? It certainly raises the priority of installing radar, after all the fog we've had in the Channel recently.
