It really doesn't have to be Sikaflex

I refitted some wooden coamings, and hatch slide bearers to my coachroof using screws and Unibond Window Frame Sealant from B&Q. This was more than 8 years ago.

I worried a bit about not using the sacred Sikaflex. Was I spoiling the ship for a haporth of tar

I now have to remove these coamings to reasheath the coachroof top. The screws are out and all that is holding the coamings on is the Unibond sealant but can I shift them? No! I reckon I could lift the boat with them!

I am now having to saw through the sealant.

Moral? No need to waste your money on expensive Sikaflex (or screws), Unibond Window Frame Sealant from B&Q will do the job!

:)

Agreed, myself I swear by this: http://www.screwfix.com/p/sticks-like-sh-t-290ml-white/22070?kpid=22070&cm_mmc=Google-_-Product%20Listing%20Ads-_-Sales%20Tracking-_-sales%20tracking%20url&gclid=CNCThPeRibYCFeXLtAod_l4ArQ I use it for everything that needs sticking or sealing.

Arbokol 1000 for bedding combings, hatch slides and the like. Since it's only a sealant and not an adhesive, once the mechanical fastenings are removed then it can be removed with much less aggro than sika. Only use sikaflex if you never want to remove it again.

I've used PU40 on a number of things. Resealing windows, seacocks etc. Never had any issues. I think the indusrty has brainwashed people over time.

But they only seem to do it in white.

I've picked it up at a motor factors before in black. I used it ton seal the keel joints. I let it go off for a week or so and use Flag metallic primer on it, whilst priming the keels, and then antifouled. On a swinging mooring all year with no ill effects or flaking.

Its also used for joints on commercial vehicle bodies, The automotive paint seems to stick to it well too.

OK the Unibond window frame sealant I used has certainly sealed the joints and lasted a long time but when I used it I never thought I might one day have to take them apart.

What should I have used that would have sealed adequately whilst allowing of future dismantling?

Do they do the small toothpaste style tubes like sikaflex do though? I can't stand binning a big tube after using a small amount and the small tubes seem to stay fresh thanks to the screw cap.

I have also used this:-

http://www.toolstation.com/shop/Adh...hesives/Stixall MS Polymer/d180/sd2340/p19594

which comes in black/white and clear and appears to be as good as the PU40 - it also sticks to damp/wet surfaces. Both are made by Everbuild and data sheets are available on their website.

It also comes in an 80ml tube!
