Istioploiophobia is the fear of Sailing; did you know this?; but of course you did. Have you ever had anyone suffering from severe fear of sailing? When I was in my teens, I took out sailing a friend of mine (he was big and tough) in a Flying Dutchman; he got so frighten that he froze while holding on to the mast, shaking, until we got back to shore. Good old days HA, HA

Years ago I was on a short charter from S'hampton. Skipper has organised the crew which included a keen young sailor and new wife. On the way across the Solent to IoW she decided she didn't like sailing, though I don't remember it as anything unusual by way of weather. She demanded that on arrival they would return by ferry. I have no idea if she was ever induced to sail again...

The first time I ever took my big brother out on my first cruiser he was very deeply & visibly stressed. I am about 7 years his junior & I think he was still thinking of me as his little bro. Can't have been too bad tho 'cos he did eventually buy a dinghy for himself.

He never came out in a big boat with me again - and before the sarccy comments start, it was a delightful trip with no untoward incidents whatsoever. We often sail on Bala in dinghies together, so maybe it's staying within sight of land that helps.

Years ago we took a work colleague and his wife for a long weekend sail. She was utterly petrified throughout. We anchored at Moelfre the first evening and she was persuaded to go ashore in the dinghy, after a half-hour private persuasion session from her husband. Next day we went to Conwy marina, where she stepped onto the pontoon and refused to re-board. Eventually she took a taxi back to their car at Beaumaris.

Another couple were on a friend's boat for a one day taster session. The weather turned a bit nasty and he anchored off Moelfre until it reduced a bit. They paid a fisherman £5 to take them ashore, then took a taxi home.
