I wired it in as per instructions. Alternator to unit, unit to each bank and common ground everywhere.

Ignition electrics appeared dead. I tried hand cranking (easy on my Bukh), but no charge and still dead electrics.

Do I have a dead unit or am I missing something?

Thanks pvb. I did see that but ruled it out as it says the engine will still start even if the alternator doesn't. I guess I can try it. Have reverted back for now as the batteries needed some help

I dont think the "fix" PVB refers to will solve your problem if your panel is completely dead

Look at the wiring diagrams on pages P4 and P6 in the workshop manual
http://bukh.dk/upload_dir/docs/FAQ/Bukh RME - Data/Bukh RME - Workshop manual/Work Shop Manual DV 24.pdf
You will see how two batteries are wired using a diode splitter
The alternator output goes direct to the diodes, then to the two batteries
Power for the panel is taken directly from the battery selector switch

If you wire your alternator, batteries and selector switch like this , substituting the Sterling A2B charger for the diodes, it should all work although you may also have to employ the "fix" described if the alternator does not generate. It depends on the alternator fitted.
